Arrow XRC8 Winch Motor Problem

Some of you might know that I had a first generation XRC8 winch.

Well it broke down while I was assisting my dad cut down some trees. I wasn't actually pulling them down, I was just keeping slight pressure on them while he chopped so it wouldn't fall on his house. I had issues with the winch a little before this as it would only work every few clicks of the button. All of this was after about 10 total times using it (several of which were just spooling it to lube the cable).

Anyways I first thought it was the solenoid, but found out it was the motor. I tore it apart and this is what I found.

Most of the magnets are busted up and there was a bunch of crap inside. Does anyone know what could cause this? More importantly can this be fixed? I was thinking about taking it to a starter/alternator refurbishment place to see if they can rebuild it. Or I could replace the motor for $100+$40 shipping. At that rate, that's 1/2 the cost of a new winch. Does anyone know of anything that I could possibly do?

Smittybilt offers a limited lifetime mechanical warranty/1-year electrical on that winch now...does your qualify for that?
