Default I wish congress would listen to teh ScOoTeR

The U.S. House of Representatives’ Oversight and Government Reform Committee has postponed a hearing about Toyota Motor Corp.’s safety problems from today until Feb. 24 because of an impending snowstorm.

Lawmakers plan to grill witnesses about whether the company and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration responded quickly and effectively to drivers’ complaints about difficulty in controlling the speed of Toyota vehicles. Among those scheduled to testify are Yoshimi Inaba, president of Toyota’s North American unit, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, NHTSA Administrator David Strickland and several safety advocates.

Toyota has recalled 5.5 million vehicles in the U.S. to fix loose floor mats and defective accelerator pedals in response to consumer complaints about vehicles that are difficult to stop. But committee investigators wrote in a memo this week that those causes don’t account for all the reported incidents. NHTSA is now investigating whether a software glitch or electromagnetic interference could be causing the electronic throttle control system on some Toyota vehicles to malfunction.

A subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee has already scheduled a separate hearing for Feb. 25. The panel requested information yesterday from insurance companies about “persistent consumer complaints of sudden, unintended acceleration” in Toyota vehicles. State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. says it warned NHTSA about a significant number of such claims dating back to late 2007.

The Senate Commerce Committee said yesterday it has scheduled its own Toyota hearing for March 2.

I wonder if this will come up:

http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/has...yotas-machine/

ABC demos a setup where they short the two TPS sensors together, and then short that either to voltage or ground and cause the vehicle to accelerate. The issue is that most ETC systems can identify when the two TPS sensors have been shorted together and will park the vehicle. The Toyota shows no faults.

I'm thinking of going out and buying one of these defective Toyotas. You have the perfect excuse to just fucking speed everywhere.

What did I bet you on? I forget, but I don't think it is that it wasn't an electrical / SW safety issue.

give me a break, I'm getting older.

I don't give the UAW that much credit. If they could've done that, why wouldn't they have done it in the 80s?

The sensor in the accelerator pedal is not called TPS. TPS isnt an input its a monitor. Is it even possible that they only use a 2 pot. APP sensor? Sounds poorly "investigated" to me, and I havent even seen the thing. Not to mention the car they were testing on had lights like a christmas tree on the dash. Pretty worthless testing on a car thats already all screwed up.

TPS isn't a monitor, it's a report. Did you get the memo about the new cover sheets?

the best reporting I ever saw was Dateline when their Briain O'Neal(from the Insurance Institute) was bashing everyones stuff and saying how well his Toyodor was whipping them at every turn. he then went one on to be captured on camera watching a Toyoder crash at 40 mph into a 40% offset barrier. the whole drivers door opening disappeared with the drivers head caught in it. he about panicked on national tv. I watched it and I quote " Oh my?? I own one of those!" it was shortly after that Toyoder Previea vans became almost extinct

Back then the government didn't have a 60% stake in the company that employed many of the UAW workers like they do now. The same government that is using it's unique power of force against the competition, Toyota.

Hey doesn't the GM Vibe have the same pedal defect? Why aren't they being called into congress like Toyota?

This is why governments aren't allowed to play in the market in a free society.

I haven't bothered to try to verify this, but I heard mentioned on some news show when this was all first coming out that the suspected problem part was made by an American company, and that Toyota was going to recall the cars and refit them with a japanese made replacement part. Anyone hear that?
