Default Need help on Suburban year/trans etc..

Looking into a new vehicle, narrowed down to a few. I need some help figuring out which year Suburbans to look at.

I hear nothing but bad about the 4l60e, but I've also heard before 2000, they weren't that bad, whats the truth?

I want a 1/2 ton with 5.3L/5.7L small V-8. I'd like the newer dash circa 1998, but the older body style. I want to spend less than 5k.

Any tips? Suggestions? I had a '94 3/4 ton I loved, wife hated. I'm trying for something lower, easier on gas, and smoother ride, with a nicer dash for her to look at.

Pretty much every 4L60E i have had any expeirence with (personal and through the shop) has need a rebuild between 150-200K.

2000+ burbs/tahoes/yukons are real nice rides.

All the trucks in my price range will probably need a trans....bummer.

I borrow my parents '03 Yukon for tow duties and its a nice ride, wife likes it. Just too much $$$ for 'em.

What 4 speed automatic transmission in a pickup truck regularly lasts longer than 200k? Nature of an automatic trans is that they wear when they shift, IMO 150-200k is a decent life to expect from any light truck 4speed auto.

Ive ALWAYS been happy with the 4L60Es and 4L80Es Ive owned and driven. (after reading the OP again, most of my experience has been pre 2000-ish)

1995+ was the newer dash wasnt it? (was it later with suburbans?) 1996 the 5.7L got the newer fuel injection. I would buy '96-'00 with complete confidence.

Questions: it says the 5.7L was optional/standard in the 3/4 ton burbs, but did that also come with the 4L80e trans thats supposed to come in the 3/4tons???

I was more referencing that if looking to purchase in that mileage range with an OE trans to plan on a rebuild/replace soon after.

But on the topic of Auto trans life expectancy in trucks, I very rarely have come across or had through the shop 98+ f150's/expeditions needing transmissions.

I dunno why I feel the need to respond since I don't know for sure , but my friends 87 3/4 ton burb with the 5.7 TBI does have TH400 3speed - so I would say yes

Understood

And I guess if the F150s made it out of warranty with the OE trans they were built to last

anyway, sorry for the clutter

4L80E's weren't intro'd till the 90's from what I have read, I also owned a 87 3/4 Burb but with a 454 and it as well had a Th-400 ( man that thing could tow anything). It was actually for sale here for awhile....

The 4l80e was not available until 1991. Any 3/4 ton Suburban 1991 up till 2000 something will have the 4l80e regardless of engine choice.
