well look at it this way, if the didn't like it being out in the open thats fine. but they were lead by their religion that doesn't allow such things. since the Dems seem to need every vote they can buy it only seems fair they would pander to any group they can propagate to their views? so in a sense if they turn the military into a bunch of ragging homos then they have won. correct?

I personally don't care as long as the thoughts about the kawk don't get in the way of them doing their jobs and gets somebody killed. I'd be willing to bet that at least 90% of the homo's in the armed forces won't be running around telling everybody that they are, regardless of what Congress says.

Why should the U.S. military discriminate based on sexual orientation?

do you have any actual data to back this up or are you just full of shit as usual?

Also, are they less likely to run when it counts if they are closeted?

Personal experience that I've seen with my own eyes. I know how you're big on seeing is believing.

You have a long track record of generalizing all people of one group based on your few personal experiences based on race, gender, or sexual preference. I simply disagree with your ignorant position.

Do you have any factual data that it doesn't?

Your lack of living outside of midmichigan shelters your view of the world and its understandable how you think do your limited interaction with society. Interesting how you generalize groups based on your vast personal experiences.

I wonder what the under/over will be on the first hate crime, discrimination lawsuit filed?

Drew, read that again and edit it so it makes sense.

I'm curious, how am I generalizing people?

Because it affects morale - nothing to do with religious beliefs.

For instance, consider enlisted berthing on a fast attack submarine. Racks are three deep, requiring guys in skivvies to crawl over each other and otherwise be in close proximity in the berthing spaces. After weeks or months underway, things can get a little "tense", after living inside a metal tube in close proximity with 130 other guys. The last thing needed is an openly gay guy (or two) to add to the tension and create friction.

That being said, there are plenty of other situations and roles where openly gay folks could serve - however our system can't seem to handle the concept of boundaries.

Not to mention it's a bad idea to have social experiments with the military during a war. Even Truman waited till WWII was over to desegregate the military. If this is something Obla wants to try, at least wait till we aren't fighting a war none the less two.

I spent six years in the Marine Corps on active duty and new quite a few openly gay and not-quite-open but not-quite-closeted gay Marines and Sailors who worked in every conceivable job from infantry to administration and everything in between. I served with these folks in combat situations in Kosovo and aboard ships as well as back on the base in garrison. I have never seen having a gay person in the unit effect the unit's morale.

As a whole, service members are much less conservative and much more accepting than the general public seems to think, especially among the enlisted folks and the junior officers. Basically, if the gay or straight Marine or Sailor can competently perform their job, nobody ever has a problem with them.

The only time their being gay ever seemed to become an issue was when they were an absolute screw-up and they would just through that into the list of charges against them to help get them kicked out even quicker. But I never knew somebody to get kicked out solely because they were gay.

Should they be allowed to serve? ABSOLUTELY! In the end, I think the simplest argument for letting them serve could also be, "Let them catch a bullet instead of me!"

Will gays be able to put aside their hormones while they serve in a situation like that described above on a submarine? I cannot see why not. For more than a decade now the Navy has allowed women to serve on ships and while some incidents do occur, I'm willing to bet that 99.999999% of the guys on ships that happen to have women aboard could care less about them being there. For every story you hear of a woman on ship being raped or assaulted or having consensual sex, there are probably 50 women who finished the float without any of that and just did their job as they were supposed to.
