Default thinking of getting a handgun

I am thinking of geting a handgun. i grew up hunting with shotguns, but never fired a handgun.

The gun would be for protection in "the city" and for fun out in the field or maybe at a range.

Any suggestions on a good gun? would be appreciated. Of course any suggestions on the law of the whole thing would also be apprecitated.

When did White Lake become "the city"?

Maybe he works in the city? I love my M&P40C, good all around gun, it is a little bulky to carry though.

I think you need to go to a range that rents guns. That way you will get to shoot a variety of guns and find the one that best fits you.

Exactly, first determine caliber then size (full, compact, sub-compact) THEN brand. That method worked great for me. Also take into account the price and availability of ammo. The range should be able to help you with that.

X2

This is what I have as well. It is exactly what I wanted from a carry piece. Definitely check one out.

I've been bumming range time with my gun owning friends for almost a year, narrowing down what I want to get. So far I like the way the Glock 22 fires (.40S&W) that my neighbor has, but unless I lose about 40lbs it's not going to be comfortable for me in a waistband conceal carry.

The smaller .380ACP pistols are great for conceal, but feel like a toy in my hand. Two fingers around the grip just doesn't give much confidence, I feel like the gun is going to jump out of my hand when it fires. (It doesn't, but my mind thinks it will)

Going next week, I was talking to one of my wife's friends husband, he has a pretty wide selection and says if I pay for the ammo, I can shoot as many as I want.

My brother just bought a S&W .38. Its a nice small 5 shot revolver, weighs 15oz, hammerless and easily just dropped in your pocket. Im thinking about getting their .357. It is a little bigger and weighs 21oz, but you can shoot either 357 or 38's thru em. Plus like I said while I was at the gun store, if I ran out of bullets I can still beat someone to death with the thing

My neighbor (retired LEO) told me that you rarely need more than 1 shot. You aren't getting a CPL so you can go to a gunfight, just to keep yourself alive in a one on one situation. In essence, if you fire a shot and the attack doesn't stop, you are likely screwed no matter how many rounds you can fiire.

Springfield 1911 or a Glock full-size. Parts are not very expensive and you can find them anywhere.

Buy used off of MGO migunowners.org

I agree with the last 2 recommendations. I like small revolvers for pocket carry or concealing, but love my full or close to full size auto's for range, plinking. My wife and I are gonna start competition shoots (JUST for fun, we're not good lol) in spring and tomorrow I pick up the glock 19 I ordered a couple days ago (for her- anniversary gift). My favorite auto is my glock 17 but would love to shoot a 1911. I love ruger revolvers but as someone said, shoot lots. Everyone will swear what they like is best, it's just different tastes, hands, etc... But welcome to the sport.

Buy a GLOCK. Best first hand gun hands down. My first gun was a GLOCK 23, easy to field strip and clean, reliable, light, carries nice and has yet to malfunction after well over 1500 rounds.

Target sports has a new store not to far from you on orchard lake rd in keego harbour. they rent a TON of guns at a decent price.

This is good advice, unless you know someone selling theirs at a steal for you.
