Default Trouble with a 302

I fired up my 91 bronco today to see if my new heater blower motor worked, and shortly after the 302 started smoking. It's coming from the rear of the engine for the most part, it's more like exhaust than anything else, and I can't smell anything burning. Is it possible that the exhaust manifold decided to crap out on me even though I haven't driven it for a month? Just looking for ideas before I start wrenching.

is it leaking oil? might want to check out the valve cover gaskets

i believe there are exhaust air lines (can't remember official term) that run hehind the heads, they are about 3/4" steel lines, i would check there

It's not leaking oil and I'm sure that the valve cover gaskets are bad. I started it up again and it was puffing a little bit from the sides and front. I didn't know there was an exhaust air line running behind the motor until today, but someone else I talked to mentioned it as well. I just finished the exhaust recently (it had been run with everything past the cat gone) so I think the newly added back pressure may have blown those gaskets. And I'm betting that tube is broken as well. I know what I'm doing this weekend, at least. Thanks for the help.

That tube is the EGR if I recall correctly. Those tubes fail somewhat often especially of old age.

Ported (electric) Thermactor Air. it is an air pump for the exhaust. it helps to reduce the CO in the exhaust emissions into CO2 + water by injecting fresh air to the hot end of the exhaust.

If any of the components in the circuit went bad, you can have exhaust fumes coming out in the engine compartment. Add this to an oil burning mill and you have a smoke fest under the hood....

EGR is a different system. it recirculates the exhaust back into the combustion chamber where PTA does its job outside the combustion chamber, in the exhaust circuit.
