Default Which job?

Theoretically speaking, if you had two jobs to choose from, which would you do?

Job 1: Your current job. The people are ok, the boss is tolerable. The work is so easy they could have replaced you with a monkey years ago. It's a contract job with Ford, with 21 years of renews. The fleet size is shrinking, and the number of tests we do is as well. The pay is pretty good. Benefits suck and are expensive. No paid time off, no tuition reimbursement, and insurance is cheaper to buy it yourself than to get the "plan discount". This job is about 8 miles worth of traffic-free commute from your house, and the hours are good (monday-friday 7-3:30, no weekends). There is NO room for advancement, and no raises have been given for 5 years.

Job 2: Recent job offer. The people are awesome, boss is great. Small company in the pharmaceutical industry which has had continuing profitability for the last 16 years. They are looking to expand to a bigger building, as well as a satellite facility. Benefits are pretty good (cheap insurance, tuition reimbursement, lots of paid time off). This is your dream job, EXCEPT: the pay is around $150 less per week, and the job is 30 miles away. Plenty of room for advancement, and they give generous raises every year. This is the job you've spent 4 years at school to do.

Pretty much my situation. I count my blessings that I still have a job, let alone have an offer on the table. I just don't know if I should jump at the first offer.

Job #2 sounds better but I would bet they have a high turnover rate.

Having second thoughts about who you voted for...commie?

Can you afford the cons (less pay, more gas, more traffic) before you get the pros (tuition, cheaper insurance)?

2. Apply for job, show interviewer your poker face

I am currently stuck in job #1 and looking for job #2. Make the jump. Working as a contract employee is one step above slavery and should be illegal. I'm going to get out as soon as possible and never come back.

So the alternative would be what? Unemployment?

I wouldn't bitch about having a job my friend.

Does anyone here actually do HR-type work? In this day and age, does making a counter offer on starting pay typically disqualify a potential employee?

I really want to say yes to job 2, but the pay thing will make things a little tighter in the wallet than I'm comfortable with. You know, being one of those people that likes to live within my means and all.

Believe it or not, that's an option too. I've applied and I'm eligible for the Doctor of Pharmacy program at both Wayne State and U of M. If (or should I say when) I get rejected by both of them, I was going to start taking EMT/ Paramedic courses to hold me over.

In my case it did not. I was offered a job I didn't like the pay so I told them I needed 10% more. They sent me another offer with the number I wanted, but my current company beat that offer so I stayed. It all depends on how bad they want you.
