Lets See I took my EMT at Macomb Community College, My fire academy at Oakland Community College, My Paramedic at Baker College. I have been working full time EMS since 04. I am a licensed Paramedic. Here in macomb county our FDs that everyone wanted to get on for job security are starting/talking Layoffs. Also good luck finding a job since 99 percent of the time if your laid off from a different department you will get hired before someone with no experience. I actually love working the EMS side. Right now one of my buddys who has 6 years on the job with a local FD is concerned he is getting laid off. I work with Motorcitydak, hell I remember when he was doing his clinicals with the company I work for. The emt class is relitivly easy. Medic on the other hand is a little bit tougher. Good luck. and honestly if you want a fire job full time. you need to get 2 things FF1/2 and a MEDIC license. and expect to go out of state. I have choose with my age and time vested in the company I am with to stay EMS. I cannot afford to leave a Job where im make 68k a year and high senority with job security. to goto a job with no senority and a inital pay cut.

BTW if you want to stay just EMT it gets even tougher. Mount Clemens just accepted apps, there a BLS department. And they stated medic prefered. really expect to leave the state if you dont wanna be a medic.

Thanks a lot. I actually just put an app. in at Van Buren FD. I have some connections, and I'm really hoping they hire me part time and pay for the remainder of my school. I have Fire 1, and was looking for places to take Basic through during the summer. I do plan on taking Medic. I was also playing with the idea of taking the bridge between medic and nursing and doing that as well as working with a fire dept. full time (eventually). I heard that a whole lot of fire departments are going to have some openings in the next couple of years (lots of retirees) so for all of us leaving the academy and entering medic, it should be pretty okay once we've finished the state (as far as finding a job goes)

I took my emt at groveland fire, The pass rate was 98%. It was great! most depts are wanting medic. with alot of money cuts I don't think dept are going to pay schooling as much as they did. My dept is a combination dept. We hire emt. As right now we have about 15 apps. in and we are not hiring.

If you are still looking, StatEMS in Flint offers EMT classes a lot, and a paramedic class.
