Default Preparing to work in another country

I have an assignment for which I need to "prepare myself" to take a work assignment in another country. I know that many of you have worked out of the country. I am interested in knowing how you prepared for working out of the country and what resources did you tap into to. Did you find a particular site that was helpful? I know how to google and wiki, so I'll save you the time linking to lmgtfy. For example, can google to find a monetary unit, but I would have more trouble looking for a specific custom, like never using coins to make change, etc.

These are the types of things I am interested in:

·Communicating (handshaking, gestures, business cards, salutations, etc…)
·Gender customs
·Appearance
·Behavior (eating habits, punctuality, work hours, etc…)
·Language
·Business Etiquette
·High/Low Context
·Relationships
·Ethnicity/Race
·Religions
·Monetary Unit
·Major Industries
Transportation

My particular country is Greece, so if anyone has anything particularly insightful, please feel free to share.

my best suggestion is to go on a vacation there first if possible. one girl i went to school with wanted to go to another country to do some kinda job, she vacationed there first then realized she didn't wanna do it anymore. saved her alot of time and money.

I worked just the same as I do here. Nobody seemed to care and I didn't get fired. You pick up their habits pretty quick when you are there all the time.

But seriously, I'd worry more about work permits and travel documentation.

Even Cananananada is a PITA on work permits.

It's good to know the customs. I pissed off a hotel manager in Serbia because I put my foot on a coffee table. I didn't know that showing the bottom of your foot is one of the biggest insults possible.

How's what's his name going to survive without you?

Ive worked in several countries.
Canada is by far the WORST.
No other country seems to be as strict about performing work in their country.

Remember, it's pronounced 'he-ro', not 'ji-ro'

worse than Brazil? I didn't think Canada was that bad, but my employer took care of most of it.
