Default I bought some obsolete tech, now what do I do with it?

Michaelís craigslist purchase of the week: a Magellan GPS 2000. Price : $2

This is a wonderfully outdated (circa 1995) piece of technology that works and is in great condition. I downloaded the original manual for it from magellanís website, put some new batteries (4 AA) followed the directions by inputting the coordinates for Gladwin and set it outside to lock into the satellites. It took about 20 minutes, but it initialized, locked in and found the position. It shouldnít take nearly as long from now on.

Now, the question is, what should I do with it? I already have a nice Garmin Etrex Venture HC color screen handheld, so itís not something I really needed. My first thought was that I could use it as a speedometer to mount on dirtbike/bicycle that I could leave on it in public without worrying about it getting stolen. What do you think?

I'll wager $10 it gets stolen the first time you take it out.

Cool find for a few bucks though.

Not necessarily. When my Jeep got broken into a few years ago. All that was in it was my then $700 GPS and my $30 MP3 player which kind of looked like a knock off Ipod. They left the GPS in the cup holder and only took the MP3 player. When I was filing the police report the officer said it was due to most theives still believe that GPS units can be traced.

Let me know what ya end up doing with it. I think I have about 5 or 6 of that vintage they all work. I keep one in my tool box for sea trials so I can tell how fast the boats run out. Keep a spare one on the boat as a back up in the ditch bag no clue what to do with the other 3 or 4

I keep an old black & white garmin handheld in the jeep all the time. I also throw it in the kayak anytime I venture out with it. It doesnt have any decent maps in it, but I leave the track feature on so at least I can retrace steps.

Its nice to have something like that and not really care if it gets stolen, broken, or lost.

I bought one of those when they first came out. Paid $200+ for it. Always got me where I wanted to go.
