Is that Middlebelt between 5 mile and Schoolcraft?

Last I saw, that Jeep was owned by Andy Koritnik. He won the Wolverine show a couple years ago for best RTI or something like that. The flaps are on there for legal issues, and they come off when he's not driving it on the road. It's actually a pretty cool rig.

people put flaps like that on all the time in states with real laws about vehicle condition and tire coverage

FAIL on his part.....................
Mudflaps are not required unless the vehicle is licensed as a commercial vehicle in Michigan.

From what I remember, it's a YJ with some coilover set up in the front, and some wierd buggy spring type setup in the rear.

Found some pics from the show.

I went to middle school with Andy actually. Never knew he'd turn into a Jeeper.

Fail on your part Jim, "commercial vehicles" is a broad category open to interpretation several different ways, ways in which not only "big dumb mud trucks" can be cited for not having "mud flaps" I'm sure you're refering to:

Section 257.714a of the Michigan Vehicle Code requires "commercial vehicles", which include pickup trucks, to have
MUDFLAPS unless the vehicle is constructed so as to prevent water and other road surface substances from being
thrown to the rear. Refer to the statute for specific information and exceptions.

Either way, unless your rig's got mudflaps that are:

Constructed, equipped or operated to prevent substances
from being thrown from rear wheels exceeding 22 1/2
degrees measured from road surface.

You can be ticketed.

I've got a few citations for this in the past...both in a full-size truck on 35's, and in a YJ on 33's...no special license required.

And those flaps are not even REMOTELY the most hil-rod setup I've seen running down the road, how about 4' long snowmobile tracks, complete with studs, hanging from the bumper to within 3" of the ground on a truck clearing 42's....WAAAAY over the lift limit, but at least he's got flaps.
