Post Fire at Cobo Audi exhibit forces auto show evacuation

Detroit -- Smoke from a fire at an exhibit today led police to evacuate the North American International Auto Show.
A display at foreign automaker Audi's exhibit caught fire around 1:30 p.m., said show spokesman Sam Locricchio, forcing authorities to have people leave the building. He said there was damage to a booth, but no one was hurt.
"We got people off the show floor as quickly as possible as a precaution," Locricchio said. "Now it's just a matter of cleanup."

Shortly after 2 p.m., hundreds of people were standing outside as police cleared Cobo Center. Police instructed those still inside the building to leave as smoke filled the display room. The smell of burnt plastic filled the air.
Organizers announced that the show will reopen around 4:30 p.m. Anyone with a hand stamp will be allowed to re-enter without charge. The stamps are given to people once they leave the car display area.
John Flanner, from St. Charles, Mich., was at the auto show with a friend, looking at European cars.
"All of a sudden I saw a lot of smoke. It smelled like fireworks. I saw flames on the ceiling and someone said get out get out and we all got out," he said.
Flanner's friend, Michael Harvell said, "Nobody had a sense of urgency, under the circumstances people were just standing around like morons. They were all on their cell phones. Then finally they started moving toward the exit. There was no panic."
Early afternoon, a few hundred people were still in the center's corridor. There was no smell of smoke in that area.
EMS workers were seen pushing an empty stretcher and security workers said there had been an electrical fire.
The auto show has had high attendance, with thousands more people attending than last year. The show runs through Sunday.

I was there today during all of this. You could reenter with either a stamp or a ticket stub. I was near hyundai when the kicked us out. I heard no fire alarms and saw no smoke from there. There were security guards calmly asking people to leave. There was definitely not a sense of urgency but I think it's because there wasn't much fire and no alarms. I think if people saw flames rather than smoke it would be different. The area by Audi was completely clear when I was stuck by Honda. It was difficult to get out of the hall mostly because we were all told to move out to the concourse. We were NOT told to leave the building. Well you can't fit the entire hall in the concourse and so it was packed. They ended up reopening the doors at 5:34 which was about 45 minutes later than they originally anticipated. I think it was mostly just to give the air handlers more time to work. Once they let us back in there was very little smell. I didn't even know it was the audi exhibit until I red this post and I visited it after they let us back in. Anyway the show was good, despite the fire.
