Default why buy $$ air intake?

rookie question....
if i want to increase air intake on my TJ, can i just take the horn off the front of the air intake filter box and cut some large diameter holes in the box to increase air intake opportunities? those high priced air intake kits don't appear to have any compressor to force more air in so what's the diff?

Yeah, you can do that for possibly a marginal gain. The big thing with the intake systems though, is that they eliminate the corrugated intake "flex" tubing, which theoretically disturbs the airflow. Some people have had really good luck with some silicone pipe joints, exhaust tubing, and an open air element (basically the same thing any intake system would be, for half the cost).

Not to mention that those pricey air intakes come with a pricey air filter to allow more air flow. I don't care if you turn the entire air box into swiss cheese, the filter will only allow so much air through.

i know for my truck i can buy the filter from the kit for 50 bux and the kit itself is 290.. so im paying 240 for a plastic pipe and a couple of rubber couplers... i like the exh pipe and silicone coupler idea

Or any baffles. I really think that most factory air boxes flow more than enough for the stock motor. Putting straight piping from your factory box to your intake would probably net you about the same HP as a "cold" air kit.

What do you want from your TJ?

Personally, I like that stock airbox. I find myself in fairly deep water occasionally and it provides some pretty good water resistance for the engine compared to an aftermarket air intake. Throw a high-flow filter in there and be done with it.

Now, if you don't wheel it and want to try to get the most streetable HP out of it, then I have no idea...

There are some 90* bends (2 actually) in a YJ or TJ intake tube I have laying around, I'm going to use that to make a 'shortram' style intake for my Cherokee, with the air filter located over the distributor of the 4.0. I plan on cutting the ribbed for pleasure section off too.

At the moment my XJ is running either a wix, baldwin, or Hastings air filter in a modified box (stock 'deck of cards' size hole extended around filter box AWAY from engine heat). In your TJ it might not be so bad to extend the hole toward the engine as it's away from the exhaust manifold heat, but I dunno... probably still warmer than the fender side of the airbox, if there's enough room to allow for airflow.

if you play in the water I don't suggest that on a TJ though, I think the air filter is placed too low, and an air inlet up on the cowl would be preferred.

No cost / slight improvemnt (not noticable on butt dyno):
Swiss cheese airbox.

Low cost / modest improvement (maybe noticable on butt dyno):
Make your own cold air intake with high performance filter.

High cost / modest improvement (debatable if this performs better than above):
Buy a kit.

Another option for making your own is the Spectre pieces at Murray's / O'Reilly. They are just plastic tubing already in all sorts of different lengths, angles, etc. The nice thing is that they are plastic (better insulator from engine heat) but look chrome (if you are into that). I think I made my own cold air intake for my Neon for under $100 and that includes buying an AEM dry flow cone filter. Plus I like my routing way better than any of the kits that cost 2-3 times as much.

I also would not think about this if you plan on playing in the water.

A cold air intake will sound a little meaner too.
