Default Used car dealer Rant

I really hate guys like this:

Drove 1 hour to look at at 1996 F350 4x4 truck Sunday - only day I could.
After hours but said truck would be open - everything is cool.

I specifically ask - is there anything wrong with the truck to prevent driving?
He assures other than a cheap paint job the truck is ready to go.

First thing I do is get out and check wheel well for rust and notice the rear spring on the drivers side, the perch is completely ripped apart and spring is resting against the bed.

What a waste of time and fuel...

dealers arent generally educated with problems..i sold a tj to a dealership that had bad rings, blown head gasket and probably 5 or 6 oil leaks. It was getting coolant in the oil and oil in the coolant. They put it up for sale and said only thing wrong is it leaves a drip of oil every once in a while when i know in fact it leaks about 2 quarts every 100 miles.

Bottom line is they are in it to make money not sell you a reliable truck.

I know what you mean. Was looking for a cheap 4x4 when my ranger broke down. Went to go look at a 2door explorer in battle creek. Talked to the guy on the phone asked what kind of shape it was in. He said oh its in great shape, just a little rust on the running boards. Go to look at it, its all scratched up, rusty as hell, running boards wouldn't support my weight, and when I drove it the trans slipped really bad. Power steering pump was about shot, 4x4 didn't work and it had a crack from one side of the windshield to the other.

They wernt 100% honest, but that is really not that big of a deal. pretty much any f series truck in Mi that is broke, has already broke, or is about to break. Only like a $35 part and a few hours work, I would have just tried to talk him down $500 because of how much it would cost to fix, since he probably wouldn't know.

when i bought my 06 silverado i can actually say i had a very good experience from the dealer. they let me take the truck for a drive which i drove it for about 30 mins, after driving it i decided i wanted it and had the checkbook in hand. i don't believe in financing so i paid cash for it. so they bring it inside to detail it and get it ready to go. well while i was filling out the paperwork for the title after i paid, the guy comes up and says i'm sorry to say but the clutch just went out on your truck. i was astonished cuz i just drove it and didn't notice anything funny. went back to look at it and sure enough the slave cylinder went bad. the guy who was detailing the truck was the previous owner of it and felt so bad about it he paid almost 2000 for a brand new clutch, master and slave cylinder. then even delivered the truck all the way from Lima, OH to my house at no charge. they went above and beyond what i was expecting of them to do.

If it was perfect, it wouldn't be for sale.

Adopt that concept and you won't be so surprised.

Personally I'm sick of dealers adding more shit to the NADA estimate when they list the price. I was at a dealership and the had two identical cars on a lot and the one with a spoiler had the performance package. I called the guy out on it and he checked it out, agreed with me, then didn't back down on price. Some poor sucker bought that car a few days later, thank god it wasn't me.

Now I'm out of my car phase and I want a truck again.

its a business, they're there to make money. the reputable ones are there to make money and a relationship therefore the customer comes back for their service and recommends that dealer to their friends and family. now the strictly used car lot with no service shop or a shop that looks like sanford and son run isn't really going to be all that honest. dont get me wrong, even reputable dealers have pretty shitty used car salesmen and new cars for that matter.

You are so right!
I work at a chevy for 10 years fixing their crap people would bring in to trade. I have to say the customers did loads to make it bad. they would disguise shit and cover up problems, but on the flip side we had a couple asshats running the used part for a long while. they sold a guy a car and it left out the back drive only to come back in the front drive. it had a hole in one of the pistons the size of a dime. the guys sold the guy an after market warranty so they didn't have to pay me to fix it at the dealers expense

I drove an hour and a half to GR to look at a truck. I delt with 2 sales people. One was the used car manager, the other just a salesman. The salesman kept telling me to push for $10k out the door, that the manager would take $10k. The manager "seemed" like he didn't want to sell it for that. I had to keep pushing and we were going to leave when he agreed to the price. Now, either they played me, or the salesman just wanted the sale so he was trying to get me to buy the truck.

For the most part, my experience was good. Other than the truck was sold as-is and there are things going on with it that were not happening when I test drove it.

Agreed on many of the above points -
I did ask about the frame and was told for $500 we will fix it for you
I just pity the SOB that may buy it without looking at the drive line.

Seems like there should be a liability here-
I mean we are not talking about leaking oil or some internal impossible to detect item.
It is visibly broke, and is a safety issue..
