Default Cb Radio

I have three problems. First is i bought this cheap cobra cb 40 channel from walmart for like 50 bucks. The second is i can hear people talking on it and no one can hear me WTF? i have the walkie talkie part in good and it makes a sound thing when i talk so i know it works but for some reason no one can hear me. My last problem is my antenna has cord and looks like shit with a cord running on my floor and roof of my truck.

PLEASE HELP

did you "key up the mic" before you had the antenna plugged in? also if it has a "mic gain" knob it has to be turned all the way or most of the way to the right (clockwise).

might need to adjust your antenna, and it wont work too well in your garage the guys that you can hear might have stronger radios, especially if you put it on 19 and try and get truckers.
mag mount antennas are almost idiot proof when it comes to grounding, but you still need to get the SWR adjusted... if you want to stick with a roof mount (witch is the best place to tx from) and you don't mind drilling a hole in the roof get a "gumdrop" mount, then you can run the wire over the headliner, if you go to a cb shop like the one chevyracer indicated they can help you out a lot more than anyone here can.

I had that problem, my radio wasn't broadcasting. The SWR might be off, but like was said before, the magnet antennas are idiot proof, or damn near it. I ran mine on top of my spare tire carrier on my Jeep, and had good luck with that.

Stick an SWR meter between the radio and the antenna and when you key it up, check what power your broadcasting at.

lol yeah i know it doesnt work well in the garage. i was trying it on the road. I have yet to get a response from anyone and i know everyone cant hate me that much. they just talk back and forth and dont hear me. No way in hell im drilling any hole in the roof lol. i flinch enough drilling one under the cig lighters for the radio mount enough. i think i should take it back and buy a nicer one with like a shorter antenna that doesnt make me have to have cords hanging out.

You want a longer antenna. You can probably get a bracket that mounts to your bumper or something, I have a 3 foot antenna, and I'm gonna get a 5 when I get my Jeep back home.

Do like I did get a bed box and mount fire sticks(the fiberglass ones) to it. That worked a lot better for me then the mag mount.

sound wave reflection. its a scale to adjust your antenna length to with wavelength of the signal you are transmitting.

its a roomer that you need a good antenna to receive, any properly connected coat hanger will do, its for transmitting that you need a good antenna with proper adjustment.
that Cheap radio will do fine for about a mile, or so with a properly adjusted antenna, if you want to keep from drilling holes in the body get a fender mount that will bolt to one of the bolts in the top of the fender and come though the crack of the hood, good solid mount, good ground plane, and mostly free of obstructions.
http://s483.photobucket.com/albums/r...t=100_0312.jpg this is the one I had on my dodge, with a quick disconnect and a heavy spring that was not heavy enough for that antenna.
If you go to a radio shop, an $8 mount, $12 antenna, and $18 stretch of wire will make your install look 100x better and make that $50 radio talk. I know there are a few guys that run that radio and its not the worst thing you could buy.

I have the same radio, and started with the same antenna as you....as I recall it worked WONDERFUL @ the dunes for listening around and to the group I was following, but I can't remember ever getting a response....possibly the antenna itself?

I got a moderately cheap (20 bucks i think?) 5ft from Flying J's and a same-grade coax cable. I haven't tuned it yet but I can easily talk to other people.....

I also have a "better" Cobra CB with all the SWR, mic gain and a needle on it so mines a little easier to mess with.

When you try to talk to people what do you say? Are you like saying ( This is [INSERT NAME] would someone like to talk) because maybe that's why you don't get a response. You got to talk CB lingo for example (Breaker one nine Breaker one nine, anyone have their ears on, come back) Try (Breaker 19 for a radio check) and see if you get a response.
