Default Tell me about kerosene heaters.

I've had this Omnispunk 15 kerosene heater for about twenty years.
Yesterday I went in for a little lunch. After ten minutes I hear the smoke detector squeeling. The garage was filling with smoke and theis thing was puffing black smoke like a 1930s locomotive climbing the rockies.

I replaced the wick five years ago, I'm up for a new one.
Anything real efficient out there.
Anything your really happy with?
Anything not wasting my time with?

Found this at Northern for $120

If it was puffing black smoke it was probably because the chimney was not seated properly or the wick is dirty. To clean wick let it run out of fuel and then let the wick keep burning until it goes out...simple as that. DO NOT use dyed kerosene only use K1 clear. The heater you posted is a 23,000btu heater and it takes 2 gallons to fill and will burn it all in about 8 hours.

I am using two small heaters a 10,300btu and a 7,000btu the 10k heater takes a gallon and will burn for 16hours, the 7k heater also takes a gallon and will burn for about 20 hours. If you add the two together I am putting out 17,300btu's (6000 less than the one you posted) but they burn for twice as long and I can spread the heat out more by placing one heater at each end of my house.

I am running homemade biodiesel in one and a 80/20 bio/kero in the other...thats a whole new story though and you need special wicks in order to do this.

Here is my 2 little heaters...last night it was 5 degrees outside and 75 inside and my furnace was off Matter of fact it has been off almost all winter so far except for once or twice a week when I turn it on just to circulate the air in the house. My house is all electric except the furnace, last years gas bills $3500 for 5 months, that is $700 a month...this months gas bill $23

I've always been a big fan of the Torpedo Heaters. I've got a Craftsman one at the shop I work out of when I wrench the thing will make you sweat in a shop big enough to fit 5+ cars in. My only complain is I can stand the sound of them for long periods - it's just annoying. And if I'm wrenching with somebody else, you can't talk unless you yell so we never have it on long enough to take the chill off the place.

Kerosene burning bothers me - makes me sneeze, eyes water, etc. I bought a propane salamander and its soooooooo much cleaner burning.

Same here. I can only run a kerosene heater in the garage for about 30 mins before my eyes start watering.

Torpedos are pretty noisy though, at least the 5 I have had experience with are noisy... they burn regular #2 diesel in the one at work, suck it right out of my f-ing fuel tanks when the truck is already on E

Ran out of Kerosene for my salamander, started running diesel through it less smell and seems to be putting out more heat. Hard to find Kerosene around here anymore, might just continue to run diesel for now. I can get my 30 x 30 uninsulated garage up to 60 degrees in about an hour.

I just got that one for christmas.. its like a torpedo, only with kerosene. It also is queit as hell compared to a torpedo heater (i can have a conversation right next to it no problem)

It also seems to burn pretty clean. start up outside for the first couple min and shut down same thing.

it will heat my 3 car garage to 90 degrees in abotu 30 min.

Most run on almost anything...I know mine can use #1/#2 Diesel, Bio-Diesel, Kerosene, or Jet Fuel (yea the label really says so...).
