Lost my Buddy

My oldest Akita passed in the wee hours Thurs am. I wasn't paying enough attention or something. He either overate or had a sudden intestinal blockage and got Gastric Bloat, I can't think of many worse ways to go.
Got him to almost 15 tho, not bad for a big dog.

I've been out awhile, the home computer puked

Sucks. 15 years is very long for a large dog. Best wishes.

He was always somewhat of a brute regarding food and maybe I let him overeat in combi with hotdog pieces with small bits of onion. I know they're bad for dogs, but he's eaten far worse it seems and in bigger quantities. Any dog can get it, the intestine flips, trapping gases that built up quick. He ate about 7, noticed some swelling at 11 when GF said he's getting sick. By 1-1:30 he wanted out and he was swelled up like a pinata on stilts. I felt helpless knowing this was it, but what whas going on?
I let him back in about 3 and petted him on the floor til 5 when he went.
Now I know he was trying to belch out the bacterial formed gas.

Time with him was magic and I let him be the bad boy and be a dog, short of biting someone etc. I know he was near the end with his dementia, the loss of control associated with it and his deteriorating hip sockets, but man, the ghosts.

However I feel the need to say something.

I would agree that with a dog that age that extraordinary measures to save him may have not been called for. I do not understand though why you would let him suffer from 1am to 5am. A vet could have put him down and ended it quickly with much less pain.

I have a 13yr old boxer whom I adore, but at this stage in his life I surely would not let him suffer in the end.

Sorry for your loss, but I was thinking the same thing. Why wouldn't you bring him to a vet?

Our closest 24hr vet is over an hour away. Yeah it sucks that the dog suffered but he may not have the cash laying around to bring the dog in.

My thoughts exactly.

This is not an acceptable reason to allow your pet to suffer.

At the time I didn't know what was happening til the end and he didn't yelp or put out any sounds of pain. I was with him face to face on the floor til the end and was expecting the judgement.
