Pull the front diff cover off (like doing a fluid change). There will be a set of numbers stamped on the side of the ring gear. (eg. 9 - 37, Divide 37 into 9 and you get a 4.11 gear ratio). Make sure to use gasket sealer to seal back up the diff cover and put fluid back in it, 80-90w and fill it till it starts coming out the fill plug in the cover.

jack up the axle.

rotate the tires.

Count how many times you rotate the tire for a complete revolution of the driveshaft.

that is your gear ratio

Sounds like 4.56. If the axle wasn't regeared by a PO, IIRC that ratio was only available in a 4-cylinder with the tow package in an XJ (basically means the vehicle would have to have been specifically ordered that way). There's no tag on the diff cover? it would have been between two bolts on either vertical side.

If there's no tag, or the ratio on the tag does not reflect 4.56, you need to do this in order to 100% confirm what you have:
