I worked at a small auto repair shop once when a news station tried something like this. Woman brought in this car with a complaint of low power, missing, poor mileage, etc. It had an injector unplugged. I pointed out the injector to the boss, and the other tech pointed out the plain white van parked across the road (there was nothing on the other side of the road, not even a driveway)

the owner of the shop was extremely pissed, and told her to get out. We did plug it back in, didnt charge, but knew right away what they were doing.

saw the story on the news about a month later. we werent in it.

Even Best Buy knows Geek Squad is useless...

The employee in the Camera section took me back up to the Cell Phone section and talked to the 3 employees up there. They all said that mini-sd cards are no longer sold there, and then proceeded to say that "Geek Squad does not know what they are talking about."
There are hundreds of these stories I read about daily on the Consumerist....

You passed up the opportunity to show that you were an outstanding shop and free PR?

My 2 year old Toshiba with Vista won't boot up right now.

I'm waiting for classes to start again so I can take it to the computer tech. center. Any time something funny was going on with my computer, they were able to fix it there for free.

I've been dealing with this for years and I've finally come up with a solution. I usually find what they are good at and start bugging them all the time for shit for free. When they start asking me hey, you know this stuff isn't free right. I whip out a bill for fixing their computer for $60/HR. They either change their mind or stop bugging me all the time to fix it.
