Enhanced Driver\\\\\\\\\\'s License and State ID card

Beginning June 1, travelers returning to the U.S. by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean must have a passport, passport card or other federally approved document to enter the country. This requirement is part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), which was enacted to heighten border security.

To comply with WHTI and provide Michigan residents with a cost-effective and convenient document that meets driving, identification and border-crossing needs, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land proposed the enhanced driver's license and state identification card. Her initiative received federal approval in October 2008.

Any Michigan resident who is a U.S. citizen may apply for an enhanced license or ID card. They are excellent options to the standard license and ID, especially for the thousands of travelers and commercial drivers that cross the U.S.-Canadian border daily.
IIRC it was $45

my friends paid either $40 or $45. don't remember. I have a passport so i never got one.

I think this was all planned out from the start, so the state could make more money on passports, and ELs.

Pay $45 for the standard enhanced license. There are additional fees for an enhanced chauffeur license and Commercial Driver License designations and endorsements.

Got one earlier this year. About the only pro to it is not needing your birth certificate. Still end up waiting the same amount of time at Port Huron sitting on the Blue Water before they started implementing it. People still cross with their old shit, and they get to hear about it from the customs agent.

Have you witnessed people crossing with their old shit?

I have one. It was my understanding that they WILL NOT accept anything other than an enhanced license, nexus card, or passport when you come back in.

Went from Port Huron through Canada to Lewiston, NY round trip back in late October. Observed many people handing the whole 9 yards to the customs agents both ways at both bridges.

Not to mention they also tell those with the enhanced ID's to flash them at the card reader. I think I only saw one other car (also including us) actually hold the ID(s) to the reader.

Just to throw this in there, they're on a 3 year renewal instead of the 4 year on a standard license. I don't even think Ohio offers them, do they? I've seen both Michigan and New York enhanced ones.
