Default Northern Michigan Skiing...

Haven't been up there since I was a teenager. Going with the family Christmas weekend.

Probably skiing two days, maybe just one morning/night. Where would you recommend? Staying in Traverse.

My wife and mom like slow winding trails, my father, brother, and I prefer as challenging as Michigan can provide.

Should note right now looking at the Boynes, Treetops, or Nubs. I have skied both Boynes before but don't really remember them. Also liked Sugar Loaf which has been gone for years I guess.

I've always enjoyed the Highlands and Nubs. Both are close if you want to switch it up between days.

Mt. Holiday is in town, and small. Think Timberridge with views of Lake Michigan. But, they have CHEAP skiing and it can be fun to go there for a couple of hours and not have to drive an hour to get there. Specials are at the bottom of this page.

The Homestead is also pretty small, but is right on Lake Michigan and has awesome views. There are a couple of pretty steep runs here and it can be fun. Kinda pricey for what you get.

Schuss Mountain/Shanty Creek is about an hour away, and is fun. There are some steep hills there, trees, and plenty of slow winders for your wife/mom.

Nubs is the best and has a cool hike-in glade area, but is close to two hours away. If you're going to get up to Petoskey, go to Nubs and not the Highlands.

Boyne Mountain is about 1.5 hours away.

Caberfae and Crystal are each about an hour away, but back to the south, which you might not feel like doing. I do really like Cab though. It's nice and old-timey feeling, and has good sidecountry trees. I don't care for Crystal.

You can do Sugarloaf with a snowmobile and get threatened with arrest like I did last year.

I'd probably do the 45min/hour ride to Schuss for the compromise of a shorter drive but slightly less fun hill than Nubs.

Caberfae is one of my favorites because it's an easy drive for a day of skiing. We got some $7 weekday passes at the Warren Miller flick that I will be using later in the season.

Thanks for the info sir!

No prob, hope you have fun! Wish I could meet up with you for a beer at Right Brain but we'll be passing each other on the highway.

P.S. You have to take M-115 over in Cadillac because the bridge over the Manistee River farther north on 131 is out... when they extended the highway a few years ago, it became quicker to go up to M-113, but you can't go that way right now.

Nubs is awesome from what I remember, but it's been a few years. Boyne is fun and offers lots of trails. Also, there is a place just outside of Frankfort called Crystal Mt. I've never hit the slopes there, but the family said it's well worth the trip

Default best 'local' skiing/boarding

my wife and her friends want to take a weekend to ski/ride. Is boyne the best area in michigan (highlands vs mountain). Any other recommendations? I have been to crystal, long time ago, but id like to find somewhere if possible where it's not just up/down in 5 minutes all day

the real solution would be to go out west, but i dont want to drive 20 hours just to turn around in a day or 2

Go to Nubs instead of Boyne if you're in that area. More fun. You're still going to be down in 5 minutes no matter where you go in the LP.

You can go to Searchmont in Canada if you want 1,000 feet instead of 500, which is still only a taste of the vertical out west, but it's a fun place. Definitely seems bigger than Nubs or Boyne.

I lived at Caberfae in the winter when I was a teenager. South Peak FTW!

Were you ever there when they had the big "whaletail" bumps the snow machines blew, and they never flattened them out? Those were a blast to fly off! They would have like 4 of them in a row, each 15 feet high.

Nubs Nob is the best in LP. Boyne Highlands is right across the street too. There's a few places to stay around there.

Stay away from homestead, that place is nothing but a hill, but the views are nice. I went there two years ago and was disappointed.

I have also ski'd at treetops and that place is actually decent, the last place I worked for had a condo there.

That's all I know about northern Michigan skiing.

Boyne Highland has a nice run on the back side. It is not fast, but it is the longest.
