Best buy has been running some smoking good deals lately.

Bought a Sony Vaio there for work today for $699 and they also have a deal going right now for a Desktop, Laptop, Netbook, and wireless router for $1199.00 installed.

Maybe, except yesterday I snagged this:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba+...&skuId=9549081

at amazon for $599, but mine has 4GB memory, bluetooth, a couple other things I can't remember, and the red I got mine in is supposedly $20. Today it is $700. Just gotta look around. I've had ok luck with my Dell (HD and memory sticks in 6 years) and the Toshiba Satellite has been flawless for 2 years.

This is the one I bought back in April:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba+...&skuId=9548983

I also bought an extra 2GB of ram to go with it to bump me up to 4GB of ram for 64-bit Win 7 which I run now. It's a great laptop and I haven't had a single problem with it.

Only difference is that I bought it when it had Vista.

If you are shopping 'budget' laptops, be sure and get one with at least a 6 cell battery. They can be definitely found in your budget. It would be worth an extra 50 or so bucks to get the 6 cell over the 4. The higher the better.

I believe mine is a 6 cell and I get BARELY over an hour of battery life, and that's even with the power options set to "Balanced" (between power saver, and performance).

What kind of processor does it have? Some higher end laptops run desktop processors, which aren't optimized for mobility and will hamper battery life.

My laptop which I stated in my previous post on power saver mode I can get just over 4 hours with wifi on. I have never run "balanced" so I cannot say.

1 hour? On "eco mode" mine claims to get 9.3 hours. People say on full power mode you can expect over 4. If battery life is a selling point, look for one of the Ultra Low Voltage processors. I think mine is a Pentium 4100 or something like that. Still a dual core.

I almost forgot...

I use the HDMI port on my budget laptop on a daily basis. I download high definition (blu-ray rips) movies, tv shows, anything really... and hook it up to my large flatscreen and use that as a monitor all the time. (I have said it here several times, sorry if I keep boring you with these references, however, it is relevant in this thread, and very very useful, I cannot stress the simplicity and convenience of having HDMI on a laptop.)

A lot of laptops have them, some do not. I highly recommend getting one that does have one. It'll basically just give you a super simple (one cord) option for watching anything you download in HD, as well as have the audio to your TV (or any monitor, of course that also has an HDMI port, for that matter)

For when you aren't "On the go", it's sweet to have a 42" (my main TV), as a monitor even for just browsing the web, music, email, IM, etc. Pair that with a wireless keyboard and mouse, and you're good to go. Some people think this can only be done on a high-end computer, and that is absolutely not the case. I've seen $300 notebooks with HDMI. And I know this has also been posted 1000000x times, but do NOT buy an HDMI cord from Best Buy, ABC Warehouse, or any brick and mortar store, but them online. Best Buy will charge you $99 for a gimmick Monster Cable, and they can be had online for $3 bucks.

They are the same quality, serve the same purpose, will last just as long, and have the same quality picture, and audio quality. Monoprice.com is your one stop shop for anything audio/video/computer needs. And no I do not work for them.

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

This is hands down my most favorite feature of my $500 notebook.

Laptop Express on Milford Rd. (south of M59, just past the highschool) usually has pretty good lease turn ins and refurbs. Last time I was there he had a bunch in 300.00-500.00 range. I have bought two from them and they even warrantied a battery when it bad.

http://www.deals2buy.com/ <-- just watch it for a week or two - they seemingly link to laptop deals from the likes of Dell, Lenovo, Toshiba, Sony or HP on a weekly or bi-weekly basis for models in that price range you quoted

about ½ way down page one is a long list of lenovo deals as an example.
