Don't be jealous.

First up tonight we swapped a Lingenfelter 160* thermostat into our Gen4 water pump. Since moving from the stock water pump to the Gen4 pump (2008 truck) to gain some clearance between the upper radiator hose and the intake tube, we found that we were running consistently warmer. This was annoying because it causes our fan to run more than it really should need to when not under load. Now with the 160* thermostat, we are back to bouncing between 180* and 195* and letting the fan cool it down and then shutting off. Much less annoying when not in full boogie mode.

The engine is still messing with us. We checked exhaust temps with a heat gun and found they were all consistent. Also did a compression test and all cylinders are 165-175, likely within error of our testing. Wondering if we should borrow my neighbor's leak down tester and see if that shows anything. Plugs were all showing normal to slightly lean except #2, which looked like it had been running fat. We swapped that injector with a spare with no change in the way it's running.

Still no clue as to why this pig hates running before going closed loop.

I thought all that got cleared up when you changed the intake out?

Nope. We changed out gaskets, swapped intakes, throttle bodies, you name it. It still will not go up to high idle on startup and then settle into its happy place. we have found if we stick a penny under the throttle stop it runs reasonably

We are not sure what the exact order is, but we found that on initial statup after swapping intakes it runs good, but turn it off and restart and it runs like ass. We have had many theories as to why this is, but nothing seems consistent enough to fix. Even the neighbor mechanic is stumped with this one..

are you sure the keep alive memory is staying hot when you turn the key off?

It was, even on a dead start after killing the battery disconnect in the past, it would stumble for 30 seconds or so, then right the ship and take off. We are still having drivability problems after it goes into closed loop even. it will idle, but a throttle blip will kill it half the time.

Because we are throwing ideas out there.

I don't know what your O2 set up is, but are the sensors good? Does it run good before closed loop at WOT?

I've seen bad O2 sensors cause running issues before closed loop...

Do you have a live monitor OBD2 that can watch their readings?

mac 'again since we are throwing ideas out' gyvr

We got back to work on the jeep in the past few days. Next race is the UMC at the Badlands on June 28th.

We have talked about moving the switch panel from between the seats to the dash, so on Sunday I got started on that. I also pulled the engine harness through the firewall to look for any wiring issues leftover from last year when the firewall grommet failed. I noticed a couple of wires with a bit of insulation rubbed through, but nothing extreme. The only wire I was concerned about was the 5V reference wire, so we will see if that clean-up work helps the engine. I patched it up, and then last night Jacob covered it up in the sleeve material for extra protection.

I worked on a removable switch panel that will be in the dash. Next up is completing the wiring. Hopefully to be complete by next week except some connectors we will add to make it easier to remove the switch panel and air pumpers. It should make for less wiring running around the car, as it's an easy shot from the switch panel to the fuse panel.

Meanwhile, Jesse pulled all of the roundy round plastic brakeline off the car and got started with replacing with a mix of hard line and braided stainless lines. All of the braided lines are AN3 fittings, and the goal is to minimize the number of adapters between the calipers, shut-off valves, prop valve, and master cylinder. Everything is done between the master cylinder and shut off valves; the rest should hopefully be done next week.

Last week the brakes were finished up and the wiring is 99% complete. I need to order some split loom and finish wiring in one pumper. Then I need to cut the new switch panel into the dash.

Tonight we put some time in to trying to get the engine running right. We ran some GM fuel injector cleaner through the system following (mostly) the service manual. It sat for 3 hours and started up pretty good, but I'll give it a few more starts before we say it's fixed or not.

That would be awesome. Let me know when you have time. We have been struggling and have had a few sets of eyes on it with no luck. Quick background is that it was running awesome last year, we pulled it out to prep for KOH, put it back in and it's had a hard time staying running until it hits close loop. The vitals we have looked at (using a borrowed snap-on scanner) look good, but no luck.

I'm pretty sure I can log it w/o having to license the "VIN". I have some time early Saturday if you're free.
