Hard day for sure.
I think the numerous failures have shown that the full mechanical steering is not the ticket. For the hydro assist, packaging is important. We can talk about some of the mishaps I had with mine & hopefully get it right.

As much as I like the plastic lines for simplicity and repairs, I agree that steel is the way to go. Since going plastic, I have had to repair mine a half dozen times. The nice part is that it is easy to repair. The bad part is that it has required repairs which may or may not be a result of the plastic. Sooner or later I am going to go back to steel but I would like to configure it so I can use plastic for a trail repair if required.

Drive faster it makes the trees fall over instead of breaking the steering box is what i learned....

or tear two front tires and smash two rims, break the steering box, rip your shock resovoir off, bend the tie rod more, smash your 9 inch housing into the ring gear, tear the break lines off the rear of youre car and make you roll down a hill destroying any straight body panels you had left haha

The tree I hit wasn't gonna fall over. lol. I'm ok with the 3rd place and my breakage vs your 2nd place and breakage.

Been looking at hydro assist stuff here at lunch. Street price on PSC with box, 1.75x8" ram, P-pump, reservoir, and hoses is $1650. Ouch.

Then there's the West Texas stuff, and Lee Mfg supposedly does some stuff, too. Not sure who else. Thinking no on AGR.

What steering box are you running?

I know it's far from racing but....quit a few guys building later model Toyota's (i'm a Toyota guy so those are the builds i read...sure others are doing it too) are running 78-79 era full size ford boxes....the internals of them are huge compared to most boxes and they put out a lot of turning power.....a lot of these rigs are pushing 5k lbs and supposedly they can still steer aired down 40's easily. Maybe it would work for you, maybe not....just a thought.

Current box was from an 88 Grand Wagoneer. Quick turning and 4 mounting bolts.

The sector shaft is what you keep breaking correct?
And aren't the sector shafts on all Saginaw boxes the same?

Are you twisting sector shafts or shearing them? If twisting I can't help ya. If shearing why not try something like a lot of the Dodge guys use:

Keep us posted on what you go with for hydro assist. I plan on West Texas due to price, but am open to other options.

You, mike, Casey.... You guys are crazy dedicated. Reading these post-race reports do not make me want to join your club, however.
Is this still fun? Serious question.

Yes, but it is kinda like being a heroin addict. Always chasing the buzz.

so trec is done? how come there were only 2. 3 including casey in your class? that's worse than when dirt riot came to Michigan. so are you just racing the clock or yourselves at that point? was there a rzr class?

TREC is done. There will only be the Ultra4 and a ECORS race at the Badlands this year.

Only 3 showed for Mod. There were 4 other guys that talked of showing but didn't, and a few are supposedly building 4500 rigs on the east coast. Hopefully it grows. The unlimited class had 30-something in the field. I don't think it would be fun trying to run with them since many of the top guys have as much into their engine as we do our jeep.

Probably should quit and just do small tire runs and drive to dairy queen.

Trying to figure out if that would do, or if we would blow it up. We are slowly learning that stuff we did for years on trail rigs fails when raced. It sucks buying the bling parts, but it sucks more buying the budget parts, blowing them up and ruining a weekend, then buying the expensive stuff.

I certainly don't want to suggest that you quit racing and go back to trail riding but damn, it sure gets disappointing to drive all that far only to break and come home to fix it again.

I can't compare to what you guys are doing but I reflect on this example. I ran ONE mud bog years ago. Ran it harder than I should have, blew a driveshaft which spun around and punched a hole in my trans. All for about 15 seconds of fun and the cost of an entry fee. I decided then and there that I could go north for a whole weekend for the cost of my repair. I have never competed since and don't have any intention to do so. There is no right or wrong in competing or not, just the commitment to the time and expense it takes to be competitive while always pushing to the max.

I wish you guys the very best and I hope you get it sorted out. It has been an interesting transition to watch.

Pretty much sums up how I feel about Jeeps/4x4s in general. Not always a good or healthy thing

What? I'm not saying quit. I'm saying I understand the frustration and wish them the best.
