Weekend recap:

Friday we had what we thought was a short list of jobs to get done before heading down. Based on weather reports of it being freezing temps on Friday night in Attica, we decided we would trailer down on Saturday morning and get a hotel room Saturday night.

Well, everything took longer than planned and we went into the house at 3am with just a few things to wrap up when we got to the Badlands. Our original goal of rolling out a 5:30am was shot. We grabbed a few hours sleep, and were loaded on the trailer by around 7:30.

Pre-running was nice with the air bumps installed. It was relatively uneventful and we got 3 laps in before our pass exhaust manifold bolts loosened to the point that we had a major leak. We pulled into the pits around 5pm with a 5:30 start.

Jess started tightening the header flange while I headed off to find some 3/8 nuts since we didn't have any. We got 2 out of 3 installed and tightened and threw on our neck braces and helmets and got belted in. Luckily another driver was further behind than us, so we had a chance to get settled in. Unfortunately in the hurry we forgot to grab some clean towels to clean our goggles.

We took off late from the line but hammered down and had a nice line into the pinch point. We wanted to follow Casey to pace ourselves with a quicker car and see how everything would hold up. We saw another car charging hard towards Casey so I let off and slipped into third place.

We hit the first section of whoops and watched the spare tire of the guy in front of us bounce around like crazy. The pace was good and the TJ is much smoother than the Wag ever was. We backed of as we came around a corner that we knew was deep mud and started hanging back of the guy in front of us to keep our goggles clean.

I then hit a soaker and it coated my goggles. I tried to clean them but they just smeared. I pulled them off and hit another puddle or two and got another soaker to the face. As I cleared my eyes I knew we were coming to a bad point in the track that we had to hit just right.

I was slowed up at this point, so I started to make the turn wide and check for others coming and it was clear. I started dropping down the hill and realized I was too far right and riding up the bank. If I turned left I stood the chance of rolling it, so I turned a little right and nailed it to keep it steady going down the hill.

booom boom. I skipped the front and rear axles off a rock, but it didn't seem that bad. As I accelerated down the hill and back into the pea gravel we had a little vibe. We hammered down and into 3rd and we were closing on the guy in 2nd when the a bigger shimmy started, that turned into a bounce and big noise.

I called to Jesse I was pulling over to check it when I saw the front tire come up and turn sideways. Ohhh fffffffffffffff....... Jesse was out of the car in a flash and called out the broken axle.

After the race Kyle from the Badlands brought out his backhoe and loaded our jeep on the trailer. Thanks to Greg for providing some light with his buggy out there.

Today on the ride home JeepM715 and I threw around some ideas of how we might get the jeep off the trailer. Hosejockey had offered to bring an excavator over later in the week, but we figured it was worth a shot to get it off the trailer on our own.

When we got home we put a jack under the pumpkin and started pushing it up. Everything was moving the way we hoped. JeepM715 chopped off the long side axle shaft flush with the tube and chopped off some of the long side to leave maybe an inch to put in the housing.

My neighbor Bart came over with a few come-a-longs and over the next hour or so we used two jacks, two come-a-longs and the winch to wiggle the axle back together enough to drive it off the trailer. Luckily we had a few sticks of missile rod left from the bump pad install that JeepM715 used to patch up the axle. We drove the jeep off the trailer and into the garage under its own power.

Awesome ending. Now to figure out what to do next.

Not sure, maybe 15 mph. I was coasting and clearing my eyes and had just got back in the throttle.

I was going to say something witty but the bottom line is this just sucks. Here's hoping you find a new axle and can keep it together.

We thought about winching ourselves past you, but decided we had a good parking spot for the recovery.

We stayed at the Attica Inn down by the Pizza hut. We both agreed it was worth the $60 to stay at the hotel instead of camping in a tent with the crappy weather.

Hopefully it gets back to normal with the May race.

Yeah. Definitely need more preparation for the little things. In the 2 years we raced the Wag, I don't think I ever soaked my goggles as bad as we did in the first couple of puddles. The fenders did more for us than I ever imagined.

Ha - well it all happens to the best of us, right!?

I bet a shower felt nice, luckily it really wasn't that cold that night! And, lots of laughs around the bonfire.

figured. I am all too familiar with the early DNF, wet, tired, cold, lets get this thing loaded and take a shower feeling

BTW, how was driving down on the day of the race? Too tiring? Too time cramped? We drove half way Fri night and spend the night on the MI/IN line, then made the rest of the drive Sat morning. That worked out pretty well since we didn't get on the road until late Fri night.

I have an 80's Ford kingpin 60 that I will probably never use....it's complete minus one spindle but I would entertain selling just the housing and inner shafts if it will work for you.

Any way to get it to R&V tomorrow? I could transport it if John would make up his mind in a hurry. Of course, I would want a huge delivery fee.
