Help with 99 ram 1/2 ton transfercase

I bought the truck about this past spring the 4x4 worked great up until about a week ago I was driving on snow covered roads and had it in 4x4 high and there is a horrible humming/grinding noise from the transmisson transfercase area, it only does it when it is in 4x4

I changed the t-case fluid and both diffs and it still does it, I got under it today to check it out and grabbed the front shaft and it moves freely you can spin it all the way around in 2x4, now none of the other 4x4's that I have owned have done that, there is a little play in the yoke of the front shaft but not enough to make it hum or grind.

Does anyone know what this is? am I in for a new t-case or a rebuild? or could the shift linkage for the t-case be off and it is not engaging all the way (it does work it just makes noise) I am not real good at transfercase's or transmissions and dont know much about them

Is it a 231 transfer case? If it is a master rebuild kit is around $150 just for bearings and seals, then if a planetary is bad its $350 for that and each gear set is around $100 150. A new one or reman is around $800 to 1200. Sry man dealing with same issue right now except mine has a rough spot in the rotation that shakes my truck to all hell. Find a used one. If you have a 241 it gets more pricy.

I had a noise similar to this one in my 241DHD after discovering that it was cooking the fluid somehow. The mode forks tabs wore off from poor lubrication. After they were gone, the fork itself was getting worn down. At first it was only in certain positions, but eventually did it in all modes and wouldn't even stay in 2HI.

ok to me this almost sounds like ring and pinion in the front axle.. reason..

makes horrid sounds while in 4x4 - if r&p are out it would def do this

spin it all the way around - on this style truck it should only do this if the front tires are off the ground and one or both of them will turn as the drive
shaft does. because there are no lockouts means the front end is rotating all the time .

so i guess if it is stll pulling in 4x4 and just sounds like crap then i would say case.

GL with the problem

I have thought about the r&p or maybe the pinion bearing? I thought it was odd that the front d-shaft spun freely with the tires on the ground too
