Default Front locker use?

Just got a jeep that has a selectable front locker on it. I have never drove a rig with a front locker and was wondering when it should be used, when is it safe to use and when should I not use it? I was told that it makes steering difficult but when I used it tonight in the parking lot at work it didn't seem bad at all the only difference I felt was it kinda felt like I didn't have power steering. The one on this jeep was made cable activated when the actuator on it went out so now it only works in 4x4, should I fix this is there really any reason to use it when not in 4x4? Sorry about the noob questions, thanks for the help.

Ok I think I can understand what you wrote.

First, you posted this @11:30 last night (some people go to bed by then) and @8 in the morning, some people must be on their way to work still so you might not get a reply right away.

So if I get this right, you got a Jeep with a front locker AND lockouts correct?
Lockouts mainly lock the axle shaft to the hub so that whenever the tire is turning the axle is turning so you can be in 2wd and the have the lockouts locked and the front alxe shafts will be still rotating. Do you get what I mean.

For the locker I would only use it for offroad. Driving on snow(roads): No locker. Driving on snow(trails): locked.

This was the way I treated my wrangler with a front ARB.

Sorry I wrote that wrong, it does not have front lockouts just a locker. Ok so I won't use it on the road at all. But now I have another question to add to the list....Should I get a warn lockout kit too? Is there any advantage to having it? Thanks again for your input.

Oh and should I fix the actuator or just leave it the way it is with the cable, does it make a difference?

You want to be able to engage the locker in 2wd? What do you think it is going to do for you if the front driveshaft isn't powered?


Also, if the cable is replacing the functionality of the vacuum actuator on the axle's CAD (like a Posi-lok kit), you do not have a selectable locker.

It appears that he doesn't know what he has and what the proper terminology is for the different components. You're right, if it's a posi-lok, then he needs to use it to have 4wd with an open diff. If it's an Ox locker, he needs to leave it disengaged. (I know you know this, I'm just talking in the 3rd person. )

Lastman, find out WHAT YOU HAVE before you ask questions. It makes a huge difference in what the answers will be.

This is true. What I am now wondering is whether he may have a welded carrier in there and not a locker since the PO chose to preserve the functionality of the CAD by installing the Posi-lok.

all the locker does is if u hit the gas both tires spin road or not it doesnt matter if its engaged or not nothin will get ruend i have drove my jeep and my truck like this for 2 years everything is fine

OP, you need to figure out what you have.!

Concerning to lock out, sounds like a Yj w/ a dana 30. Dont invest lockouts on something like that because it would be $500+ to just bring the wear and tear down on the front drivetrain.

I agree with everyone else that it sounds like you have the axle disconnect on the long side axle shaft in the middle-ish if I am correct.

Sorry guys, here's some pictures. I have no idea of what I have. I do know that when I put the jeep in 4x4 it drives like any other jeep in 4x4, when I pulled the red lever it felt like I kinda lost my power steeriing but not bad or anything just made it a little harder to turn. Thanks for the help guys.

I called Planet Power SPorts (BDS) and they want $70 just to look at it and tell me what it is.

I can't see the pics here at work, but why do you need anyone to look at anything? You never said there was anything wrong with the vehicle in the first place. Get under the Jeep, pull the front diff cover and check to see whether there is a locker in there, or a welded carrier.

Theres nothing wrong with it that I know of, I just wanted them to look at the axle and tell me what I had. I'm not sure if I should pull the cover off, I have no clue what I'm doing or what to look for.

If nobody replies regarding the pics you just posted (since I can't see them), post a picture of what you see behind the cover just like you did a few minutes ago. We'll tell you what you have.

that is NOT a locker!!! That is a cable activator to engage your 4X4. You have to engage that button to make your 4x4 work, along with your transfer case lever being pulled. You got hosed Timmy. Like others have stated you have this: http://www.4x4posi-lok.com/

its a posi-lock. the OE is a vacuum powered disconnect which doesn't work very well. what the previous owner of your vehicle did, was install a cable operated disconnect. how it works is your long side axle shaft is 2 peices, and has a collar that engages the two together via shift fork. its called a Central Axle Disconnect. (CAD) that locks your front axle in, than your engage your transfer case for 4x4. if the original owner welded the diff, or installed a spool.. it becomes a poor mans selectable locker. meaning when you engage the axle, it is fully locked, when its disengaged it acts as an open carrier.

OK as long as you guys can tell me how to put it back togeather, is there a special seal I need? What oil goes back in it and how do I get that oil into it? Thanks alot for the help!
