Default 99 Diesel What to check

Ok so i went and looked at a 99 f250 diesel tonight that seemed to run great and rode smoothe. He says it has a 6 inch exhaust and tune, but all he showed me was a little dial and said that controlled idle, boost and had settings for towing and fuel economy and performance. Is this possible or is this just a simple boost controller?

Also what should i look for wrong with this truck. It has 180,000 miles

Thanks,
Brandon

lot of good info here

97 powerstroke - good - bad? - Great Lakes 4x4. The largest offroad forum in the Midwest

As far as his chip, ask him the brand. It is possible to simply turn a dial and go to a different tune. Infact, I recomemend Tony Wildman chips and his is simply a knob that you turn with no fancy display (get good gages for that).

I could possibly look it over, however if you just check out the link above and look for those things, you should be OK. Make sure you start it cold (ask him not to start it for 12 hours) so you can make sure the glow plugs are working and check for white/blue/black smoke. The "wait to start" light should stay on for 8+ seconds. If it stays on for 3 or less there is a problem with either the relay or multiple glowplugs. Not a big deal, but something to check. Ask about the history of the trans. 180K is at the end of the life cycle for sure. After the test drive, pop open the hood and look for oil or diesel leaks. You should be able to smell the diesel if there is a leak.

Do you know if it is an early 99 or 99.5? Looking at the build date on the door jam will tell you. A build date in 1998 is certainly an early 99. A build date from Jan-Mar 99 will have some early 99 parts, but maybe not all. A build date after 4/99 is considered a 99.5. Some people stay away from the Early 99, I personally think they are better due to the turbo spooling faster (but it is louder). Major downside is the E99 has the 15 deg oil system. For what it is worth, I have an E99 and love it.
Here is a thread about the differences

feel free to shoot me more questions if you have any.

I guess I only covered some of it.

Check the balljoints. Take a jack with you and jack up one tire. Put one hand at the top and one at the bottom andpush/pull to feel for slop. If it drives without any clunks, they are probably OK, but they are worth checking since they are expensive to repair.

Check all the u joints, including the front axleshaft joints. Those are easy to check while the tire is jacked up in the air. Also check the front manual hubs (assuming they are manual).

Front sway bar bushings are also common failures. Cheap to replace. Or if you are like me, once the bushings go bad, you'll just take the front sway bar off completely.

check the oil pan for rust. They are a royal pain in the ass to replace once they rust enough to develope leaks.

pull the trans dipstick and check the color and smell. If it is dark red and smells burnt, there are issues. If it is a clean red and smells really sweet, you're OK.

My truck is at 220K miles or so and most of the suspension bushings are getting tired. Not much you can do about that though

Hopefully this all makes sense, I'm really tired haha

thanks bones those are some good tips

the only problem i have is the guy is a dealer and this is the truck he has been taking home at night so i wont be able to get to it before he drives it and warms it up... right now the plug for the engine block heater is ruined so i kno he hasn't been plugging it in (he has the new one ordered but hasn't picked it up) he said he took it up north last weekend in the cold hunting and didnt plug it in and did just fine

is there any other way to check the glowplugs to make sure?

and i just re-read your post and that would be awesome if you would be able to take a look at it possibly... the guy told me he has no problem me taking it to get looked over i just don't know anywhere in the area that knows diesels (he is in madison heights and the only place i kno of is hallice diesel (sp?) in romeo

If he wants to make a sale, he'll drive another car home for one night

I fly back to Michigan tonight. How soon do you want it looked at?

Thanks for the offer... i went a head and passed on the truck just because it seemed too cheap to be true, and he seemed in an awful big hurry to get rid of it... i asked him anything wrong and he told me nothing until i realized 4x4 wasnt working then he told me he knew it had a bad hub

after that was discovered i decided to pass

thanks for the help guys i looked at a 00 f250 lariat crew today and like it a lot. ran a car fax on it never any accidents but it has had 6 owners

first owner owned for 7 years
second owner owned for 5 months
third owner owned for 2 months
fourth owner owned for 3 months
fifth owner owned for 1 year 4 months
and now the current owner has had it for 7 months.

the guy told me he has to sell to save his house, but would this worry you all of these owners selling so soon?
