i like my blue ray- five bucks a movie sucks but bewber scenes are the best. also some new releases will be all out in dvd and but can find them in blue. my biggest bitch - WTF is up with the black bars across the top and bottom- i thought the friggin point of a wide screen was to get rid of them- yet blue still has them -why?

Films are recorded in a variety of aspect ratios. If everything was filmed in 16:9, you wouldn't have black bars, however, this isn't the case. Popular aspect ratios are 1.85:1 and 2.39:1 for films.

if you have a tv capable of a great picture, Bluray is awesome. Another vote for Planet Earth. The picture is amazing.

Comcast HD is good, i think it is 1080i while bluray is 1080p so the quality theoretically is not the same.

Prices have some down on the players and they are a little more reasonable now.

That's BS. I hate the lines. That is part of the reason (2 years ago) I bought a new TV.

I have a bluray player and love it. Certian movies are amazing on it and mine has the availability of on demand content from netflix, Blockbuster and Pandora internet radio. I dont use the netflix or blockbuster but the pandora radio is pretty sweet. Yeah there are probably other ways to serve that to my surround sound but it is very convenient this way.

It's not B.S., it's just a fact you need to come to terms with... Since different things are recorded in different aspect ratios, you need black bars SOMEWHERE... or your other option is to turn on stretching, which looks terrible.

If you had a 2.39:1 TV you'd be complaining that your 16:9 content had black bars.

For all the retards: it's BluRay not "BlueRay" or "Blue Ray"

My TV is large enough that imo standard dvd's look like shit. However I don't have the stereo to take advantage of the 7.1 surround sound. My 10 year old mtx floor speakers do just fine

PS3 fanboys will deny the demise of BluRay (the title to your thread, and a lot of posts here are incorrect. it annoys me when people call them blueray.)

However, they will, in fact, have a short life span... as the future is in streaming media, not physical discs.

I have had (notice, past tense) a BluRay player and watched several great flicks. It does have an excellent picture, and allows for uncompressed audio, due to the amount of storage that can be burned onto them.

Gaming might live on BluRay longer than movies will, just due to the simple fact that very large/complex games will fit onto them that wouldn't otherwise fit on a single DVD. They have the ability to store much more information.

For example, I recently purchased Forza 3 on the Xbox 360 (there are other games as well of course, this was just my most recent run in with this) and the game has 2 discs. The main game is on one, and more content is on the 2nd disc that installs additional cars and tracks, once installed - you don't need the second disc any longer. If the game were on PS3, they could easily fit it onto 1 disc.

BluRay for movies will not last long. Sony will milk it as long as possible (does the MiniDisc or MemoryStick sound familiar?) Proprietary formats typically don't last.

Cliff notes: great picture, huge storage capacity, but won't last. Streaming content is the future (and present, for most)

We'll see what people think when internet access is regulated by the FCC and ISP's start charging for "excessive" bandwith.

Anyhow, I'm enjoying BluRay for now, and hoping it doesn't turn into BluRay-Ray.

Sincerely,
PS3 Fanboi

Blu-ray is pointless for 99% of people who watch them. Sure, some deliver 7.1 sound, but how many people have a 7.1 system right now? Anyway, your tv size vs viewing distance usually won't reflect the need for a blu-ray. Hell, I can barely tell the difference on my 73" 1080p with blu-ray at 15'.

Its the same waste of money as buying a 32" 1080p. unless you're 3' from the screen, there is no advantage over a 720 set.

Sony is really pushing blu-ray players right now, and they're bundling them with their flat screens to make them basically free.

I'm surprised it caught on, because most people don't have the equipment to ever notice a difference between the $9.99 dvd and the $24.99 blu-ray.

People who still pay for stuff you can download for free are not very smart to begin with.
