I have to agree with others and I don't think you should own a gun. I do think you should install heavy doors and dead bolt locks along with an alarm system!

Your OP states your Grandma was home alone when robbed by 4 people.

First off, very glad she is okay. Take good care of her.

Now then my thoughts.

How is you getting a gun going to protect her? You live with her? You state later, you would shoot them and then "finish him on my own". So why the gun? Just beat them with a ball bat, golf club, etc.

And I seriously doubt with 4 people suddenly appearing in your house, you would be able to wake up, pull out a gun and successfully shoot all 4.

Then you state your Grandmother is fragile and you worry about her having a heart attack. You don't think seeing her grandchild pulling a gun and shooting it would send her over the edge?

Agree on the dog. Even if it is not a big dog, dogs make noise. Burglars don't like noise prior to getting in. Second choice, pump shotgun of any size. No punk in the world who doesn't know what the sound of a shell being racked sounds like. Makes the blood run cold.

the last few post were very helpful. it's not like i can go out tonight and get one. no...she does not live with me. the gun wasn't for her protection buy for mine. she insists on not having a dog. she does not like them. i do like the BB gun idea. NO! i would not shoot to wound and then kill them myself bare handed. i'm not damn psycho dude.

i've been reading quite a bit over the past hour and have come to the conclusion that guns kill people. who knew? just kidding. settle down morons. maybe a gun is a bit much, but i'm fucked if four dudes come into my house and try to do damage with out one. what are the chances right? yeah! that's what i thought. i think maybe a tazer would be better for me considering i've never shot a gun before and i really don't want to do all the training i believe is necessary to be a responsibly owner. i really don't care if tazers are illegal. so is breaking and entering and assault and they usually walk with a slap on the wrist. so...keep bashing and ragging my right to live. i'm over it. hopefully you never have to hear your family calling you for help in that type of situation. not an easy thing to hear. can't even imagine how scared she was.

Still sticking with my suggestion of a dog.

I have a Dobby and a Husky. Both very large and vocal.

Nice thing with dogs, they work even if you aren't home.

And women love dogs.

I think Sabastian should wait until he's a grandma before he gets a gun.

I'd be pretty frustrated as well if someone did that to my Grandmother. Just remember, buying a gun out of anger is just a bad idea. If you end up buying a gun, learn how to use it properly, and safely. It only takes one mistake to change your life or somebody elses. CCW or other classes aren't that expensive. Just be an educated buyer, and a responsible gun owner. We need to be careful how we present ourselves as gun owners. Otherwise we just give the anti-gun crowd more ammunition against us.

like i said, i've been thinking about it way before this happened. this just made me realize that i'm really not that protected. i know there are other ways, and in my area, i'm sure a gun is WAY too much. also, i don't think i can go out and get one tonight. and yes, if i were to buy one. i would do everything and more to be a responsible gun owner. even if i were going to get one. i wouldn't even get one for a while. what is the big deal owning a gun for your own protection? no one has answered this question yet. gun owners need not apply to this question.
oh believe me iceman, we have tried talking her into getting a dog for years for this exact reason. 2 years ago she had a guy break into her house through the second floor bathroom window. thought she would have at least thought about getting one then, but she insists on not getting one. she even said she'd rather have intruders than a dog. she just doesn't like them. we have a rhody that's quite terrifying to people who even walk by the house. i was thinking more in depth as far as what if...? when i asked about a gun. i wasn't looking for posts like, you're an idiot for thinking about getting one. i was looking for more replies on why i should or shouldn't have one and what other options do i have protecting my self?

Guns don't kill people! People kill people. Guns don't majicly go off without something happening to it.... be it dropping, fire or pulling the trigger. You should never own a gun... you are too unstable!

No gun for you. Get a dog and a security camera system.

I'd be worried that because they got away with the break-in the first time, they'll be back again. Your going to have to think of some way to protect your Grandma. Maybe think about moving in a family member for awhile till you get these asshats caught?

Dear OP.

These people are not trying to rag on you because you want to protect yourself. They are raging on you because of how You presented the question and the Attitude you had towards other people in your house.

Having a Gun to protect your self and family is not bad. It's having a "I'm gonna kill the first guy that comes into my house" kinda of Attitude that worries many of the Guys (including me) on this site. Part of Owning a Gun (I don't, but have looked into it and thought about it often) is being able to judge when to use it. With the Anger and quick to shoot attitude you had in the first post, It appears you wouldn't make a Proper choice and possibly make life even harder on your family because you'd be in jail. You think that you would be helping your family but by getting a gun with out the proper respect for them you could be hurting them even more then a Burglary.

When you have a gun and some one breaks into your house, You get them into a Safe room, Shut the door and Tell the Burglar that you have a Gun, You are trained to use it and you are calling the cops. If they enter the room, you make that choice then. You just don't go looking for the guy and blow his head away.

Nothing is wrong with owning a gun for self defense... but being how you have never shot a gun before most would say you should take a gun safety class before buying one. Also you should rent a few different ones before you buy so you can get a feel for the gun before you drop $400 or more on one. It would also be wise to have everyone from you house take the same safety course so they feel confident useing it as well as having it around the house.

In the future you should watch how you word things! Saying the wrong thing to someone could get you into a heap of trouble.
