Default I need a gun!

4 people broke into my grandma's house today while she was home alone. They kept her in the basement while they went through the house and grabbed as much as they could. They were there for about 10 minutes she says. They left without hurting her fortunately, but this scared her and the entire family. I have been thinking about getting a small, light gun for my self and my girlfriend’s protection. We don't live in a bad area, but you never know. So my question is, what is a good, small, light gun that can do some damage? I'm not looking for a gun that will kill someone with one shot. I'll finish him on my own. Cops can come and clean up later. I'm thinking about a 9mm or something similar. I want to be able to keep this between my mattresses. How much should I be looking to spend?

I have a Springfield XD .45 and I love it.

I would not be so gung-ho to shoot someone either , even if they are in your house. When I got my CCW they put it to me like this you shoot someone you will be going to jail until it is all sorted out. You get what you pay for in handguns. My brother bought a $200 handgun (can't remember brand) new and it jams all the time.

Looking for home defense and not a carry gun nothing scares them off like a nice 12 gauge. http://www.bigskyguns.com/Model_500_...t_In_Case.html

I don't think you should probably own a gun.

To the OP:

You dont seem to have the right *reasoning* to want to possess a gun. you could possibly do more damage that Good.

For home defense shotguns are the way to go. I have both types for protection and if I ever had to use them I would grab the shotgun first and the hand gun as a backup. The reason is the shotgun patterns and has about a 3" bullet at 10 yds and the pistol only .38-.45 depending on caliber. It is much easier in the heat of the moment to hit a target with a scattergun than a pea shooter.

someone breaks into my house while i'm home? fuck that! he's done! i'll let my rhody eat him after wards. it's either him or me in the end. maybe i'm posting my question in the wrong forum.
by the way...she doesn't like dogs and .45 is too much for me to handle. 12 gauge would be nice but too large and it would probably knock me the f out.
i have only shot a bee bee gun before. chances for me to ever pull it out from underneath the bed is to lock it up when i have kids one day or to use it on someone that's putting my life in jeopardy in my own home.
my grandma is also pretty fragile at her age with epilepsy. what would have happened if she had a seizure or a heart attack that killed her.
i bet you'd be the first to shoot someone in your house that was threatening your family.

that is a nice one. i would have to take some classes to learn how to use it and try it out at the range. i know absolutely nothing about guns.

You don't have to buy the big calibers/guages. For home defense a .410 or 20 gauge is plenty big enough and will be rather easy to handle. Plus, the smaller bore shotguns are relatively cheap to buy.

I'd go to a gun shop and ask for recommendations or maybe a shooting range....

Who posts shit like this? If anything ever did happen, the things you have said in this thread alone would incriminate you. I'm sorry such a horrible thing happened to your grandma... But I bet she would agree you should never own a gun as well.

Sorry about what happened to your Grandma. I would seriously considering getting her a well trained Dog.

maybe i'll just buy one of these. you think it will scare someone off? god damn some of you are such...panzies! i never thought about getting one before until recently with all the shit i've been hearing. what's wrong with a little protection? it's not like i'm going to use it ever unless i absolutely have to. what the f!

i didn't want this to turn into a bashing. i was just looking to get some info on a gun since i know a lot of people have them on this forum.

thanks to the guys who had info on this. i'm looking at several different types. i'm even buying one for my dog so when he gets into a fight at the dog park, he can just "bust a cap" in the bitch.

was this in G.C. ?

12 guage is best, got one in the closet. Basic plan is hit the a-hole with the butt of the gun then if needed use the fire power :D

Plus its more fun to hit rather than take the easy way out and shoot

You do not seem like someone that is in the right mindset or skill level to posess a gun. I personally would not consider rubber bullets, If I feel the need to fire my weapon at another person, I intend for it to be nothing less than lethal. A shotgun has alot of knockdown power for homeprotection and serves well, however a handgun with a tactical light works well to identify an intruder and carry easily.
