Arrow Magazines for our Troops !!

Sorry guys..My computer skills suck

I might be posting this in the wrong section....but recently I may have started a new idea here on GL and wasnt sure where to put this ..

Awhile back a female friend over on gotmud4x4 was asking for old magazines..(NOT PORN !!!!!! ) but more like Field N stream...car & truck stuff ..., I meet with her an donated several boxes, which she shipped to a family member sering in our military over in afganistan..Irac..ect ..ect !

I am not saying I have all the answers here...but I know there is alot of "RED TAPE " around sending stuff over there...I'm sure you can understand....

Anyway...If anybody wants to clean out there old stash of mag's (which need to NOT BE PORN !! ) and they are in good condition, then maybe GL can get some guys to volenteer to collect from there friends ( Locally ) .

Once we get a few guys together with lot's of Mags....then the gather-ers could meet up with me , and I'll see to it they get over there....( I will of course pay for the shipping myself )

Just trying to help our troops before the Holidays....

So what do you guys think.....If someone is more qualified...buy all means feel free to contribute to this Idea

I'll do what I can

I think that you can send better things than this, since the magazine racks at PX's over there already looked like 7-Eleven years ago when I was there.

You can't send something to "Any Soldier". If you read the Anysoldier.com "How to send" page, you will see that the guy needs the packages sent to him specifically since the Department of Defense outlaws mail sent to "anybody". Anything addressed to "Any Soldier" won't go anywhere. You need a specific person to send the items to.

So, unless you're going to send them to a specific Soldier out in the boonies or to the Soldier running that site, it is a waste of time. There aren't many areas that don't have logistical support anymore (unlike back in 2003 when thay guy started that site), so many times the reading material ends up in "civilization" and does nothing but fuel the burn barrels.

Things like this frequently gain momentum because they sound like "nice" things to do, but people don't understand how they actually work or what issues may be associated with them - much like the "Cellphones for Soldiers" effort that someone tried to start on WGM. The phones don't actually go to any Soldiers. They get recycled.

Well, that's part of the issue. Unless that guy and his unit is out in the middle of nowhere, there won't be a shortage of stuff like this. The other issue is with what "you would think" he could do. Who are you to think about what some Soldier serving overseas can do to make you feel better? He isn't yours to "make use" of.

Have your female friend ask whether the guy or his unit can even make use of stuff like that. Otherwise, you're all spending time, money, and gas for nothing. Shipping things over there which are already there is dumb. Personally, I'd be pissed if someone sent me 25lbs of magazines and assumed I would be fine with being tasked to distribute crap over there. We're not airline attendants that walk the aisle asking, "Would you like a magazine?".

If they are cool with it, fine. Ask first.

I have a couple large boxes of magazines that I want to get rid of. Most of them are Petersons 4wd & offrod, 4wheeler, car and driver, JP, etc. I am located in Fenton but work in Flint. If someone might be heading out to lapeer to drop some off and wants to pick up mine let me know. Just PM me and we can make arrangements.
