Scrapped - I've seen several SM420's for sale on this site for what I thought were decent prices and no one was buying. I just decided to pitch it to get it out of my way.

Front end fabrication almost done

Comparison of the "chopped" crossmember vs. stock:

Backing plates in, notches cut out and reinforced:

Reinforcement for upper a-arms completed:

Next is to order the drop spindles and front-end crap, along with a mustang II steering rack and get it set up.

Well,
Just ordered:

T-bird turbo coupe steering rack (quick ratio)
all balljoints and a-arm pivots
TREs
CPP 2.5" drop spindles
stock height springs
HD 5x5" brake rotors

While I wait for all that shit to filter in, I still need to find some 5x5" rollers, rip out the stock rear end and start to figure out how the g-darned IRS is going to fit back there.

Thanks Bryce - I consider that one heck of a compliment!

No pics - but one side of the front suspension is on, the engine & trans is in for mockup and I'm working on the rackmounts.

Do you think the frame is strong enough where you notched it without boxing it?

I wonder as well. Might be a good idea for a little plating/boxing.

It reinforced with 18 inches of 1/4" steel welded to the inner frame rail, then 1/4" notches were welded in.

This is *way* overkill for the location - especially when you compare it to the kits that are sold out there: Some weld in a 1/4 notch to the frame with no other reinforcement, others offer a 6" wide plate that is thru-bolted to the inner frame rail with like 15 bolts.

I did some analysis and the new cross section is about 75% as strong as the unnotched frame. The frame ahead of the notch only has about 700 lbs. of static load - and I'm nowhere near yield (hundreds of psi vs. millions) with the new section. I DO realize this will make a difference in an impact, but it's too complicated to calculate (can't just approximate a cantilevered beam solution for a frontal impact).

I plan on boxing the frame *behind* the front suspension as I have increased the twisting of the frame rails about their own axes by increasing the lever arm by 2".

Quick picture update.

Rack and engine are near their final spots - ended up having to move the engine back an inch and I need to order a smaller crank pulley and damper. The current ones are 8" in diameter and the ones I'm getting are 6". This becomes very important with respect to where the rack wants to be for the steering geometry to work out.

High-dollar spacers to match alignment with the serpentine setup - temporary, of course.

Looking at the blurry spots - you can see where the rack would benefit from more clearance from a smaller damper and pulley.

I got these headers for like $5, and with the current mounting location of the engine (and ditching the mechanical clutch linkage) - these fit and will be used. Once I cut off the air injection tubing, there is plenty of room to run the steering shaft to the rack input (blurry silver spot in the photo)
