Default Ford Explorer Slave cylinder Failing Constantly!!!

Well my slave cylinder went out on my explorer yesterday for the third time in two years. Funny story actually, I ended up running my own mailbox over when the clutch failed to disengage

The first was the original slave from Ford, the second was a motorcraft part that only lasted 8 months, and the now third was an Autozone special and lasted about 15 months. Every one failed in the same fashion with them springing a leak internally.

Why canít I seem to get one to last? It is a major pain in the ass to change these on the garage floor, though I can do it in about 4 or 5 hours now.

Is it possible dirt/mud could destroy these?

any insight is appreciated

You might want to use your clutch less, use it only to start your vehicle from a stop or when decelerating. The rest of the time you can get up to speed and shift it without pressing in the clutch. It gets wore out where the throwout bearing rides on the slave cylinder and rubs a hole in the slave.

apparently it was a year and 5 months since the last one, so probably like 40K since being changed

any other insight into the failure?

I was having alot of failures with slave in my m5ord. The seal gets eaten up from all the mud/dirt etc..

I took mine out and got some screen mesh ( like from Lowe's for house windows). I made a few plates, drilled a few holes in bell housing and covered the openings with the mesh to keep the larger nasty's out. I was replacing a slave a year, now they are easily lasting twice as long since doing this.

Also make sure the fluid itself is good and clean.
