Is that $1000 for the body only? I'm pretty sure you can find them new for $800-900.

If you get it let us know what you think of it compared to your D40.

not claiming it's any better than the D90, but I saw the d5000 at Costco in a kit with a lens, bag, etc. for $1000.

Just FYI, know nothing about it.

Hit up the review sites. They're pretty reliable. I don't know if popphoto.com or dpreview have info on their sites. Most likely they will.

I was impressed with my D300 last weekend when I shot over 1800 pictures in probably an honest 3 or less hours of "work".

The newer models do have some benefits over the D300... I know you noted below before I edited this post 06TJSport. It's not that cut and dry though.

I do have the MB-D10 and shooting up to 8fps is nice.

I bought a D90 last month at Best Buy, they had a deal on the D90, 18-105mm kit lens, Camera bag, extra Nikon battery, and a tripod for I think $1199. I love it so far. It has more features, a higher resolution LCD screen, and a better kit lens than the D5000 for only a little bit more, worth it in my opinion. I researched the hell out of them before I bought mine so if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

d90 ad d300 have the same sensor, differn't processing firmware... i have heard less than spectacular reviews regarding the video and live view modes on the newer nikons...

check out www.kenrockwell.com... very good site for reviews and no-nonsense tips

Anyone have a 18-200 mm VR Nikon lens?

I think mine is fudged up again. Does anyone have problems getting it to focus at wide angle?

I had to replace my d40x after my mother in law dropped it

I went with the D5000 mainly because of $$$, I couldn't spend any more now with the holidays and all.

Just tried the video, and haven't pulled it off the card yet. For me, it's a matter of doing any video at all versus none because we have a video cam that we never use because I'd rather be taking pictures, so I'll take something over nothing, even if it's not great quality. I'd never think of it as a replacement for a proper video camera.

The jump from the CCD 6.1 mp sensor to the CMOS 12.1 will be the biggest difference. Not really the MP number, but the ability to shoot at much higher ISO and not have pics look like a snow storm. I bought a D200 a year or so ago and love it, however the only downfall is the 10.2 mp CCD sensor. I really wish i would have flipped for the D300 or D90, but at the time both had just come out, and were much more expensive.

The only other thing i love about the bigger bodies is the ability to switch all the settings right at your fingertips, unlike my D40 which i had to plow through menus to alter even the simplest settings.

Mine works just fine. It's my everyday lens on my D90.
When in doubt, reset the camera settings.

Try it on a different camera at Camera Mart in Pontiac.
They'll sort of diagnose it right at the sales counter while you watch, no charge.

The sales staff at camera mart were awesome over the phone. I was trying to find a non big box store to buy from to get better service. The sales guy help make my decision over the phone but unfortunately due to there store hours I had to buy from best buy. They also had the same prices as best buy.
