Default 01 burb temp gauge

my wife's 01 suburban with the 5.7 is "running" hot, Just started the gauge will go all the way to about 240 deg and the check coolant temp light comes on. I turn the heat on and it is Nice and hot, I checked the rad fluid level and its good.

Could it be a coolant temp sensor?

What else should I be looking for?

The sender is a good possibility. I can't remember if the LS engines used 2 senders for coolant with one being the gauge and the other going to the computer or if it ran one for all. Does it run good yet, not running odd? Could try plugging in a scanner and see what the comp is seeing.

only other possibility if it has higher miles is simply a thermostat going bad. definatly want to see if the sender is bad or if there really is an overheating issue.
