Default 91 dodge W/cummins..turbo or not?

Ford guy here tiptoeing into the dodge forum. Does a 91 Dodge 250 4x4 with the cummins engine have a turbo or not? This particular truck has a 4 speed manual trans. What trans Should I look for if I want to swap in an auto? I would be buying this truck for plowing so the auto would be more suitable to my needs. Also, is there any pros or cons to this year motor compared to the others oris there anything I should look out for in this truck? THanks for any tips.

That truck does have turbo. I beleive the auto tranny would be a 727 but not sure if it is different than a gas motor. Check the dif gear ratio because I know the auto's came with 3.07 gears and it would be nice to have 3.55 or higher for a plow truck. Manuals my have a better gear ratio. good luck.

The gear ratio depends on the production date. There are two different 91's, that being a 91 and the other being a 91.5. They are considerably different.

Some differences are:
  • 91.5 is intercooled, 91 is not.
  • 91.5 has an A518 Chrysler overdrive trans, 91 is a 727 trans.
  • 91.5 will have a Dana 60 front with 3:54 or 4:10 gears, the 91 will most likely have a Dana 61 front end with (rare 3:31 or) 3:07 gears.
  • Manual trans in a 91 will generally be a Getrag, they suck really bad behind the Cummins and scatter easily with any abuse. Most get swapped out with a NV4500.
Good luck with the truck if you get it. I've got the Dodge shop service manuals for the 91.5 if you need further info. From what I've seen at parts stores the Haynes and Chilton don't cover the deisel model in their books for some reason.

I was the first one to look at that truck, I passed on it. It was a killer deal, but the body was so far rotted that the driveline is the only good thing left in it. Who ever bought the truck, they need to make sure to check the fuel return line at the tank. It was rotted off and spewing fuel out when I looked at it. I crawled under the truck, cut the line and reattached it as a temporary fix, because I didn't want to blow fuel all the way home. I ended up changing my mind about the truck, I hope the seller told the buyer about the fuel line problem. By the way, it was a 4-speed hand shaker, kinda rare, most where 5-speed sticks. It was a good runing truck tho. I wanted to buy it, to resell and make some cash, but it wouldn't have brought enough to make it worth while to me. I would've loved to have the driveline tho for my crewcab.
