Default 2002 Honda XR200r (Mini) Adventure Bike

I posted this on ADVrider, but I thought it deserved to go here too. ( http://www.advrider.com/forums/showt...=502070&page=2 )

Ever since I discovered adventure rider, I had decided that I wanted a dual sport. I had no money available to spend, ( I was just married in May) but I had things to barter. I put up an ad in craigslist and somebody sent me a message about an XR200.

I've been told that it's too small for me, 5'9" 230 lbs, but others have said don't worry about it. I rode it and loved it. The first problem was it's not a dual sport, it's a dirtbike. That's ok, though, beggars can't be choosers.

The XR200 has a lighting coil, so I can make it a dual sport. I have ordered the Baja Designs Headlight/Taillight kit (with new wife approval) so I will have a hi/low beam headlight, a taillight, and a brake light w/ switch. Now all I need for Michigan to be street legal is a turn signals (2 arms), horn, a mirror, and DOT approved tires. From what I've heard, the cops never look at the tires. :)

I put a set of Weaver Leather saddlebags on it to keep tools, extra gas, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, etc. I used a ram mount set up to put my Garmin Etrex Venture HC on the handle bars.

For now, i can still ride on the side of the road on certain roads in my town and surrounding counties here in Mid Michigan. :)

Any suggestions welcome for ways to make it better on the cheap or needed farkles.

I didn't have much to do today and was getting antsy about working on the XR200 (waiting for the light kit), so I did a super penny tech rear rack. It's made of 1/2" PVC pipe and foam insulation. I know, it's not the most sturdy material to use, but I am without a lot of tools like welders, benders, etc. After I constructed it and mounted it, I was actually surprised at how sturdy it was. At the lower speeds I probably plan on driving, around town, to and from the trail, it will probably work fine for sleeping bags, sleeping pads, tent, etc. I modified 2 90 elbows to bolt onto the fender mount. The middle bottom rail of the rack rests on the fender. I glued it all up, let it dry, sprayed it with some metallic silver spray paint to match the frame, and applied the self stick pipe insulation. I had gotten one of the nets for 1$ at the dollar store. The pvc and hardware totaled about 13$.

I was originally inspired by this:

http://windsurf.mediaforte.com/roadt...T250_rack.html

Here's mine:

Hooray! My Baja Designs Kit came in along with the UNI filter. I installed the BD kit, but not the filter, as i don't have the correct jets for the carb yet.

The kit went together pretty good, except the brake switch came with a spring that was way too long and a bulb with a burnt out hi-beam bulb. Nothing that an email to BD won't solve hopefully.

Oh yeah, the best part, my ADV stickers came in!

Onto the pics...

Once I get the new bulb and spring, I should be able to call up the local cop and get it inspected to make it road legal, so I can take it on the MCCCT trails.

:)

Look at Pirelli tires - I know the 19/21" sizes are mostly DOT legal.

Wait, scratch that - I think I HAVE A SET of street-legal knobbies in your size I can sell you cheap - I'll even mount them.

PM me if you're interested...

I finished it up this afternoon. I called Baja Designs and they are sending out a new bulb. They say that the spring is supposed to work, but there is no way it will where they are saying it should go. I figured out a different spot to mount it, but I'm not 100% happy with it.

I took some pics of the lights on.

Just a bit of friendly advice, don't be in the same county when ScOoTeR wants to "mount" your tires.

It kind of made me want to turn my CM250 into an adventure bike, but since I go the dirtbike, the idea of trail riding a heavy pig of a street bike doesn't seem so fun. :)

After I had ordered my Baja Design lighting kit from the Motorcycle Superstore, they had sent me a credit for 40$ for use in September. I used it to get a fender tool bag and a sticker pack. They came in today. It's an O'Neal. I thought when I got it, it would be a removeable tool bag, but it bolts on. I was kind of apprehensive about drilling holes in my fender, but since I had to to mount the taillight, I got over it.

Since my bulb is partially bad, I don't have a hi-beam right now. I wonder if I need to wait for the bulb to come in to get a cop to inspect it?

Is it a special bulb? Usually those use 9003 or h4 bulb, like $6 at Meijer? And yea I have a dirtbike, so I should probably keep them separate.

Hmm, i'm not sure, maybe I'll have to check it out. I do have one in the mail right now and I'm going to busy all weekend with my sister in law's wedding.

I grabbed a bulb from the local tire place, it's the wrong wattage but it worked. I had the police officer inspect it and sign the checklist, so now I just need to take it to the SOS and get a plate. :)

I finally got a chance to do a little exploring today. At about 4:30 PM I hopped on the bike and went east to the Au Sable State Forest. I rode on the Center Fire Trail and the Mosquito Alley Truck Trail. I didn’t actually go on the ORV trails as I didn’t have much time, but now I know where they are. I had fun anyway. :)

I went out on the ORV trails today. I had a blast. I can't imagine wanting a bigger bike on these tight little trails. It's a lot of sand and whoops, but I still had a lot of fun. I saw quite a few people out camping/hunting. I also found this cool little swamp.

I went out today for a few hours on a late "color tour". I say late because most of the leaves have already fallen off the trees. I had fun nonetheless.

I took a different route this time. I followed the river heading east towards the state forest.

Finally hit 3 Rivers road and took that up to Ridge Road which leads into the State Forest.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2588/...774ed6645c.jpg

Went through a mild mud puddle on the Mosquito Truck Trail

Oh noez, I'z gettin' durty.

I got on the ORV trail and found this on the ground. I picked it up and it wasn't damaged. I stuck it in the tree so the owner might see it and pick it up and that way it won't get crunched by somebody else in the meantime.

the trails are pretty sandy

and then I got sick of taking pictures, got back to the main road (m61) and went home to have lunch and get warm with a nice cup of coffee.

Man, I love this bike, I need to get another one or a bigger one, so I can get my wife out with me. Anybody want to trade their XR200, XR250, XR400, or XR600 for a nice condition Cm250 road bike? It's a really nice commuter.

I took a trip around town (Gladwin, MI) this morning. It’s really fun on roads where cars haven’t been down or where it hasn’t been plowed. It’s a little squirrely where there isn’t a bunch of snow. I had fun nonetheless. Next time, I’ll have to get up earlier. Maybe a nice Saturday morning after a storm. :)
