Default Recommend me a new DSLR

In the market to replace my Canon Rebel XT. I really enjoyed that camera as a basic DSLR and am looking at the XS now. Is there anything else you guys and gals would recommend for a decent price?

First off, I know mostly nothing about these cameras so far. I spent a fair amount of time on cnet.com reading reviews.

I ended up buying a Sony A230 and in the few days I've had it I've been pretty happy with it. Then again, I've never had any others to compare it to. And I have a bunch to learn how to use it. lol

Anyway, check out Amazon.com as there are good deals on there.

I'm a Nikon bigot.

If you don't already have a sunk investment is lenses, etc, now's the time to jump.

Nikon D-40X under $300 (body only) and D-60 Under $400 (body only). I recommend the D-40X - slightly higher than D40 pricing and D80 resolution. Best Buy.

I recommend anything Nikon. I love my D40 and my D200. However if ur upgrading i would not go with anything less than a D70. Reason being that if ur getting into dslr heavily the smaller Nikons wont focus older non AI-S lenses.

I picked up my D200 with the whole BestBuy $599 deal. I LOVE that body, takes great pics, and will work with most older Nikon lenses. Only thing i dont like about it, is that my D40 has a remote control that works with infrared, and the D200 doesn't have that wireless option.

Like any major purchase, you need to stick to the price range you can afford.
I graduated from Nikon D90 to D700 [FX] recently.
Nikon 18-200 f3.5 was my primary lens of choice on the D90.
Price range of DX lenses to full frame is significant, but worth it.
Now I have the Nikon 50mm f1.4, Nikon 24-70 f2.8, and Nikon 70-200 f2.8.
The D90 "package" including battery grip and speedlight SB800 was around $3000.
My new Nikon D700 including battery grip and speedlight SB900 "package" was around $8000.

Nikon sucks! Get any canon with the full size element so you don't get the 1.6x maginfication like you do in most Nikon.

Look at what 90+% of professionals use. CANON

Canon has just as many less than full-frame cameras as Nikon in their lineup. Plus, any full frame camera isn't going to be anywhere near a decent price compared to a Rebel, but they're nice to lust over.

Any Rebel isn't going to be much of an upgrade your current XT. If you want to upgrade you are going to have to go to the 50D or 40D range. Don't fall into the MP trap, to really see any image quality increase when printed you have to double the linear resolution so that means that you need to increase the MP by a factor of 4. So until they come out with a 32MP Rebel, your XT is going to be just fine in the Rebel line.

Optically, you wont see much of an improvement, from one body to the next unless you do a lot of High ISO shooting because then the noise handling comes into play. The upgrades of pro bodies is more of the ease of use and the build quality. At typical ISOs you will see very little if any difference between your Rebel XT and a 50D, at high ISO the 50D will have a lot less noise. On most pro level bodies there is a button or switch for everything, where as on cheaper cameras most stuff is buried in menus and stuff which makes making changes on the fly more difficult.

Anyone that suggests the D40 or D40X as an upgrade over a Rebel XT is out of their mind. No offense, but it just can't compare.

I really suggest that unless you want to spend for a 50D that you just keep on working with your XT, it's a great camera. My only complaint with the Rebels is that they are small and plastic-y.

What's your budget? You can probably find a good deal on a used 40 or 50D as a number of people are upgrading to the recently released 7D.

I wouldn't be afraid to buy an older body .. Some of my favorite pics were taken with a 20D.. The body is very secondary to the glass. The hard part is finding the right lenses for what you want to shoot... Sooo many options...

Nikon guys always get butt hurt when you bring out the "what professionals" shoot with statistics. Look at the Pros and go no farther

The pros shoot both....

Canon V. Nikon isn't worth arguing over they are both excellent companies with great reputations.

It's all about budget if you have a history with one or the other, and even what your friends shoot that way you can borrow lens

That's not very basic.

Nikon vs Canon is Ford vs. Chevy. Shoot what you like.

Glass is what maters, buy the body with the features you like or need. If your looking to do this professionally, spend the money (lots of it) now on a Pro camera with a full size sensor, like the 5D. The lowest pro Canon (40D) have come way down in price lately. You can get a 40D body for the cost of an XSi kit. The XSi has more features than the 40D, and arguably shoots better pictures; but the 40D is built better, its size is appealing to some, and it's faster.

I bought my wife a new camera a few months ago. She is a hobbyist with tons of natural talent, and the desire to be professional. I sat on the fence between the XSi and the 50D for a while, but then I realized if she ever decides to go pro, she will certainly want something better than both anyway. Plus I found the XSi in a refurb kit for a great price.

I don't think anyone can tell you what brand is better for you. Get them in your hands, feel the balance, work the controls and see what feels best. The Nikon is better or Canon is better crap is stupid.

XSi refurb kit...
