Looking for a little advice from all you legal types/ people with experience. As stated in this thread
Damn AJ Hall\\\\\\\\\\'s *They caught the bastards* - Great Lakes 4x4. The largest offroad forum in the Midwest
we were broken into. Long story short, our camera was "thrown in the trash" according to the officer who stopped by the house today.

The thieves are mostly young punks under the age of 18. Is there any legal recourse I could take against them/ their families for our loss?

A civil suit against the minors parents is in order.

Although, the prosecutor should order restitution.

talk to his parents. if they seem uncooperative a civil suit against them would be your best action.

X2. But if you want reimbursement you will have to follow through and stay on top of it once the ruling in your favor happens. This of course assuming the parents are douche bags.

there is no singular version here. This is several kids involved in this little "spree" of theirs. And I honestly have no interest in speaking to them. There isn't one single thing they could say that would change how I feel about the situation. (unless of course they might offer up some free hard labor for the rest of their lives )

In 1999 I was held at gun point guy got $30 from me and ten years for it. Part of his plea with the prosecutor was paying restitution, but I have to wait till he was out of prison and he only has to pay by the end of his parole. If your worried about restitution call DA's office and talk to the attorney handling the prosecution, they should be able to let you know what to expect.

I more or less would really like to set an example. Although some restitution would be nice.

And one of the lead prosecutors for Wayne County is basically a neighbor

What I was told by Livingston County was that he or in your case they have to repay what was taken.

Found this on Michigan votes think it answers better then my exp. ten years ago. So the law has changed since my experience.

Public Act 28 of 2009

[History, Amendments & Comments] [Text and Analysis] [Add to Watch List]

•Introduced by Sen. Alan L. Cropsey (R) on January 29, 2009, to revise the law that requires criminals to repay victims the value of property losses resulting from their crime, to authorize recovery for replacement value if fair market value is impossible or impractical to ascertain.
•Passed in the Senate (36 to 0) on March 10, 2009. [Vote Details and Comments]
•Received in the House on March 10, 2009.
•Passed in the House (109 to 0) on April 30, 2009, to revise the law that requires criminals to repay victims the value of property losses resulting from their crime, to authorize recovery for replacement value if fair market value is impossible or impractical to ascertain. [Vote Details and Comments]
•Received in the Senate on May 7, 2009.
•Passed in the Senate (37 to 0) on May 7, 2009, to concur with the House-passed version of the bill. [Vote Details and Comments]
