Hmm...Cornfed huh....you didn't by chance used to have a lot of "Fun" in a CJ-7 did you? I do believe the 33" radial turds in the first couple of pics may have come from you....they used to be on some 6-lug Duke-boy wheels...

guilty as charged. Were the radial turds on a FSJ? I have not owned a FSJ or anything 6-lug. I'm struggling to remember which fine classic auto-mo-bile(s) you acquired from my BIL. A crusty CJ5 or two. . . . did you take home the hybrid metal/wood FSJ?

I believe they were on a Nissan something, they hadn't been attatched to a vehicle in a year or so when I got them from you.

Two steps forward, one step back..

Pulled the alternator yesterday, tore it apart and cleaned it today, repacked the bearings, reinstalled...VOLTAGE!!....for about 60 seconds...then nothing, so I go to check the connections and one of the field terminal studs comes off in my hand...so I pulled it back out again and will see if I can get it fixed up.

Put six fresh quarts of the cheapest 20w-50 in it with a cheap new filter and VIOLA! Oil pressure has returned, 20lbs at idle, and over 40 at 2000rpm with no knocks...I still plan on finding and preparing another 4.0L, but I think this one has a little life left in it, we'll see tomorrow when I can let it get up to temp.

The old oil totaled up to 5-1/2 quarts and was thin and black, but no sparkles and no water.

Wait a minute! I don't want the buggy gone - I want to get a team of girls together to compete in the unlimited class at TRRC next spring.

I did it again...reminded myself of how much I don't like mud.

Every year I help the local Optimist club host a mud-bog for charity...and for the second time in 8 years I entered my own rig. The 34" swampers would have put me in a class that runs in a much bigger pit, so I put myself in the 33" class and DQ'ed myself after the run....in which I smoked the pit in 9.23 seconds, 2nd fastested run of the day for that pit (behind the 500hp S-10 Blazer that competed at Twisted Trails) and one of only (4) out of (13) rigs to make it through that pit.

Now that all that's over with, I can actually start BUILDING some things in this "build" thread. I still think the motor is toast, but with fresh oil it not only ran like a top at the mud bog, but I also drove it all over my property moving stuff around on Sunday and all it did was loose a little coolant out of the water pump...rod knocking pretty much the whole time...and never overheated....weird.

Yup, she's done for sure now, I had been putzing around my property with it and thought maybe I could get another run out of it...well, I was wrong. I made 5 or 6 passes in the mud pit at a friend's benefit party and the knock really opened up. So naturally I decided to race my friend's SAS V8 Bravada on 38's, and ran neck-n-neck with him (with 4 passengers) until the knock became a bang. I managed to turn around and hold it to the floor (5500 rpm the whole way) all the way back to the trailer....it died with the front tires at the end of the trailer. After it cooled down it drove right on the trailer and I've been putting around with it at the property some more, only now there's no oil in it at all, and #6 rod is hanging out the bottom of the oil pan. It still runs good enough to drag a full-size Chevy truck with (2) flat tires around my property, as long as I give it time to cool down every ten minutes or so.

I'll be swapping in another 4.0L after I get some pre-winter honey-do's done around the house, and move the CJ-5 in my garage into storage.

Yup, managed to avoid touching it for several months...but I've purchase lots of parts, and I've disassembled quite a bit of it.

Look for a new build thread with a completely different project scope in the next month or so.

Default Abandon ship!

Well, after WAY too much procrastination, and total abandonment of the original project scope, I have decided to drop this build like a hot rock.

I'm not giving up on the XJ, just on "this" project, and this build thread. As I mentioned, the original "simple" project scope has been strayed from long ago, so look for a new build thread after I've made some progress....don't hold your breath. Lots of things have been keeping me from working on this thing, but they haven't kept me from buying parts for it.

I did manage a few minutes with it today, including shoving it out of the garage for some cleanup, so here's a teaser pic of things to come...freshly installed 6.5" springs that I got a SCREAMING deal on....then stood back and said "Yikes!....thats WAY too tall!"

Short arms? You have plans on a long arm of sorts? It is a nice start.

Definately long arms, in fact, the only way I could get the current short arms to bolt up with 6.5" springs was to whip up the most ghetto frame side control arm mounts ever seen, mainly so I could roll it out of the garage.
