Default 12 gauge steel

Would it be good to use 12 gauge steel to make lower door armor on a Jeep XJ? I wouldn't care about scratches, I just want it to be moderately dent-proof. I have a 24x48 sheet of it with nothing to use it on. I was going to make tube flares but I no longer have access to the tools I need.
I figure if it could work it would work good. It would keep the weight of the doors down a bit instead of bulletproofing it with 3/16 or 1/4" steel (overkill for my application I think). I'd drill holes rosette style to weld the plate to as well. This would just be the lower probably 6 inches of the doors, right up to the first crease where the plastic door scratches are. Thanks.

Thats almost 1/8th so it would be better than the stock sheetmetal. If you already have it I say go for it.

I just want to make sure it would be worth doing. I don't want to replate it. Granted this isn't an area that has a high chance of denting but still. I'd like to do it right the first time, and if this is good enough I'll do it.
