Default th350 trouble

I have a th 350 in my jeep hooked to a chevy 350 this tranny was rebuilt about a year ago.. recently it has stopped shifting into 3rd gear and has trouble goin into reverse.. It goes into gear without trouble when its cold... so we tore it down assuming it was a seal we replaced the seals and checked the clutches all seemed fine.. When we put it back together it shifted great into reverse and third. I took it wheeling this weekend and once again it isnt going into third at all an it will only go into reverse when the motor is reved up and even after it goes in it is still slipping.. Not sure if maybe its a vaccume problem or what.. Please give me suggestions on what to do. Thanks alot.

Well, the direct clutch pack is used by both 3rd and reverse. Your hot-trans condition does make it sound like a seal issue as well as the needing to "rev the engine way-up to get it to go in reverse.

When you replaced the seals, do you mean all of the seals? What kind of condition did the seals from the dircet clutch apply piston look? Any tears or chunks missing?

As for 3rd not working, do you mean by manually shifting it to 3rd or letting the trans shift automatically? When it won't go into 3rd, what does it do?

New to the site here, but I've been messing with these trans' for 24 years now, so I should be able to help you on this.....

well since I have blown a couple up here in there I have to agree its a clutch pack problem. it sounds like a seal is leaking OR the filter is pugging up to the point its not moving fluid to a weak pack. have you checked your fluid for being burn't? if so then the damage may already be done.

one thing to add. if your vacuum modulator was hooked up wrong that can toast a trans. since they go to manifold vacuum they tell the trans to apply more presure when under heavy throttle. if by chance it was hooked to "ported" vaccum just the opposite would happen

OK, I've seen this happen once before; are you running a cable shifter? If so, can you manually shift it into 2nd and down to 1st? If not, you may not be getting full travel of your selector valve. I once even found the detent - rooster comb looking thing attached to the shift shaft, not put on in the exact flat spot of the shift shaft and that caused the trans to shift funny and act funny in certain gears, for the selector valve was not lining up with the right passages in the valve body.

If it's not a seal, that's the next thing I can think of.
