The homeless have plenty of soup kitchens and shelters if they would use them.
I would like to take my daughter to one to volunteer sometime. I would rather give my time to something like this that is uselfull, than just throw $$ at a guy on the corner.

The homeless would have their lunch at the soup kitchen and then go on campus to beg from the suckers so they could afford drugs or alcohol.
I think this is what turns so many people away from helping them. I see these guys every day. They never want food even thought that is what they tell you they need $$ for. I have offered my lunch to bums many times as I am working. They almost seem pissed I want to feed them and not give them $$$. One guy was thankful for the food. That guy I gave a few $$.

My sis did a bunch of volunteer work with her church this winter around both thanksgiving and xmas time. Mostly with young single mother familes with ALLOT of kids. Her observations. 1. they do not belive in birth control despite being on well fare and every kind of assistance they will pop out a new brat ever other year.

2. non of the baby daddies are in the picture or a good role model.

3. Despite being section 8, well fare, and an all around charity case their apartments are shit holes with literally human waste in the hallways, yet they have leather sofas, big screen tvs, new designer cloths, and a random high priced gaget like ipod, gameboy or PSP etc. Not exactly the necessities.

I was pretty disappointed to hear this ... though i kinda knew from my days cutting off cable tv in the hood, damn near every house in the ghetto has premium cable with all the add ons. Compared to many middle class neighborhoods where the people pay their bills manage to get by on basic cable.

I think a fair amount of people are homeless and living in squalor cause they are just idiots. You could give them a million dollars and two years latter they would be homeless again.

Also she gets hit up by bums at subway all the time ... two things happen ... when she says walk to subway with me and i will buy you a sandwitch they NEVER want a sandwitch. Or she gets hit with the same sob story multiple days in a row by the same guy (he pesters so many people he cant remember who he asked already) favorite story is someone is in hospital and he needs bus fair to go see them.

I've done my share working at Food Banks and Soup Kitchens...

...my biggest complaint at the soup kitches is having to ask everyone to turn down their I-Pods so they can hear me ask "Soup or Sandwitch?"...well...that, and they steal the salt.

I still give money to homeless people. I take them to a restaurant, or buy some food from them whenever possible, but, if I'm in too much of a rush, I will just toss them some coins or a few bills.

I'm not a rich kid, and I'm not ignorant to the fact that there are many bums who are just trying to make the tax free cash, but there is something in me that will not allow me to just turn my back on someone who (at least looks like they are) in need. Besides, (God forbid) if ever I was to fall into some unfortunate circumstances, I really hope that someone would help me out!!!

As a sidenote, I also don't think that it is so easy for them to get a job if they are truly in need. If the homeless guy who was sitting in front of the "Now Hiring" Taco Bell was able to fill out the resume and got a job there, where would he shower for work? Where would he shave? How would he clean his clothes? I guess I'm just unsure about that. Do they have facilities to wash clothes at the shelters?

As you all know I work with veterans every day. I also work at our annual "Veterans Homeless homecoming". At this event they are offered free health screening, free clothing, personal hygiene kits, availability to job training and/or Veterans Administration education and disability benefits. You would be surprized how many homeless veterans prefer their present lifestyle. About half are already receiving a disability check each month from the VA..they just prefer their present "freedom" lifestyle.

on my way yo UofM to fill out some paper work passed a "bum" sitting at an exit for US-23 at Geddes, holding a sign, the normal bit, as a car roles up a portly woman waves a few dollars out the window to him. she doesn't see his geo tracker sitting about 50ft away from the corner so that the people comming off the express way can't see it, it was not full of his belongings, he did not live in his car. He's just an asshole playing the system, i just yelled "liar" out the window as i drove past him after the light changes.
Shit that asshat pulls more money in from people than i do in a 6hr night delivering people food.

90% of the time when you ask if they would like it if you took them out for dinner or offer them your leftovers outside of a resturaunt they say no because they dont want food, ive seen it happen a few times in front of my own eyes.

some even have enough nerve to stan outside of a coney island in DTroyal oak right in front of the frickin HELP WANTED sign, GET A GRIP!!! i KNOW those places and fastfood places would take them in, they just would rather mooch off of the too-generous/push over section of society or the people like 87'yj who feel pity for the lazy fucks. dont feel pity, if they realy gave a shit about getting their life together its more that possible.

and you have to wonder. how did they end up in this sitaution how did they get sooo low in society that they decided to become homeless?? BECAUSE ITS EASY! if they made a ton of mistakes in life and lost everything, HEY everyones gotta learn somtime, life isnt over.

and alot turn down welfare programs (foodstamps) because theyre limited to buy certian things we need, milk, cheese, cereal etc. not mcdonalds and booze

my family gives to charity and they always buy all the presents at xmas time for 2 unfortionate families- but they arent homeless, theyve got a crappy house and kids are getting good grades in school and the mom is working 3 jobs, atleast they're making it in the world! they decided to not mooch off of society, YAY!!!

More kids= more $, and it's not like they are going to take the time to raise them any way

If they hadn't allowed themselvs to be ridden more than a subway maybe they would know who the daddy is, or at least find a rider with a job.

Yup, when I did evictions that is exactly what it was like. The sad thing is that Section 8 has upped the housing standards to the point that they are moving dirtbags into apartments/duplex/etc.. in the better parts of town and scaring off decent people. And if you do want to evict a section 8 tennant , you have to find them alternative housing they approve of before you can kick them out. Because of this slumloards can't rent out anything and they are abandoning their houses to revert back to the city for back taxes. The houses then are usually taken over by gangs and drug dealers, until a rival shoots it up or burns it down.

Don't kid yourself, it would be gone in two days.

Every holiday the local TV crews head down to the soup kitchens and do their feel good story about the wonderful service these places are doing for the poor and homeless in the community. The funny part is that as they are standing out front spouting the "this is so wonderful" reteric, you can see in the background that "the poor" are getting out of new cars to go eat for free. When they grab one or two of these poor downtrodden souls for a statement, they always seem to grab some poor soul that's wearing new leather and are draped in gold nugget or herringbone.

.............And why is the "bum" with the "help a family" sign at the I75/Davenport exit wearing new $150 Danner boots?

Probably the same reason he's driving that Malibu parked around the corner on Cronk St.................

Because stupid people give him money !

Done with my rant............................for now.........

Hunger and homelessness are sad. If we really wanted to fix the situation you stated, we would make smaller portion sizes (just enough so the customers would eat, be full, and have no left-overs) and provide the rest to the shelters.

But if resturants did that, cutomers would be healthier, but feel cheated since the portions would be smaller, so they would buy more, and more likely to eat or waste more due to the fact that they had to buy extra. Then with what ever spare food is left, well the would keep it as profit, and wouldn't dare try giving the food away due to liabilites, loose your business because you gave out a 99 cent cheeseburger

Where I work in Portage, we have a "homeless" couple who sits out in front of our building on westnedge ave. She holds a sign every day begging for money. He sits in the shade all day and sips bourbon. Most of the time he is too drunk to stand. One time this winter the female admitted to me (while being very intoxicated) that she just panhandles for the money, and has an apartment, and drives a Ford Explorer that she parks behind Home Depot, and walks to her usual spot. If they were really homeless they wouldnt be in my store every day buying hotdogs, pop, and icecream.

this shit pisses me off. Downtown Kzoo, there are some truely needy people. People who eat the food that others throw in the trash. This damn woman really takes advantage of kind people.

I really hate it when someone comes up to me at a gas pump and asks for money for gas, because someone is in the hospital, or ask for money for food. I will offer to pump some gas, or purchase some food, but they decline every time, AND get pissed that I will not give them cash.

The other night I was pumping gas, a guy pulls up to the pump next to me, he looks POOR, shitty car, shitty clothes, smelly, and dirty, claims that he does not have enough gas to get home, and asked if I had a couple bucks. I told him that I didnt, pumped my gas, went inside and paid. I got about 5 bucks in change back, and said what the hell, I spotted the poor bastard the cash. He just took it without thanking me.He goes inside, and what does he do? Goes inside and buys a fucking pack of smokes. I was so fucking pissed. Try to help someone out.... Stupid bastard.
