There is a link in that Pirate thread of a guy who did the same think. His looked like it was built much better, and it actually worked pretty well it looked like. But it would need a panhard bar.

I really love guys who think that with a Harbor Freight MIG welder and some scrap steel they can 'engineer' a better suspension than the factory.

I got stuck having to weld some 1" plate with one of those Lincoln 225 AC welders at a customer's plant, what pile o crap. My WWII vintage Forney 190 amp arc welder does 10x the job, but then it's a 70% duty cycle vs 30% for the Lincoln.

So far he's changed the front suspension, swapped in a Hemi, and now experimenting with the rear....and it's a DD.....

Guess it helps that he has room in his garage. I'm limited by the weather right now.

This picture says a ton. The idea that the spring won't wrap, *THAT* spring, thats crazy. Darn near the same amount of work and its 4 linked on coils. The axle will pivot on the lower and wrap badly as that thin, worn out, bent spring flexs. Especially with the leverage put by putting that so high above the axle tube.

Those welds are scary. I don't see evidence that the machine used is bad, but the operator has no concept of how to hold the gun/elecrode, and move/fill correctly. Just knda poking it at until metal appears I guess.

THese shots of the spring bracket... um. You can spend that kind of money on joints, but then use some chopped up bolts/rod to booger weld them to 1/4" plate. That 1/4" plate *will* bend and loosen.

I foresee those grade 8 bolts holding, beyond that it's a pure crap shoot.

My guess is that one of those welds will fail first...actually the welds have already failed.

"Holding" things together and "welding" things together are 2 different things.

why spend the effort researching proven methods when you can come up with some of your own engineering that's just been waiting to get out of your brain!

this looks scary. period. this is a prime example of when you don't know what you're doing, have a professional do it. second if I was doing a suspension and Jesus and 95geo said it was unsafe or a waste of time I would stop
