Default Earlier B2's.. 2.8 Carbed...mpg?

I'm trying to find a cheaper ride to drive to work. I go 270mi each way and my Chevy gets 12mpg. I have a friend that has a mid 80s B2, 4x4, with a carbed 2.8, auto, in pretty good shape inside and out. All stock. Think this would be a step up in mileage, or should i just keep looking? I havent worked out a price yet, but it would help him out, and he'd probably drop it for $250, so i'm hoping this will fit the bill. Basically, I have little Ford knowledge, so fill me in. Good motor or not? I'd like to get 20mpg if i'm going to plate and insure another vehicle...

20mpg in a 2.8 B2? Never happen. I had a 84 with a reman 2.8 and c5 trans with 235/75-15 tires that got 15 on the highway if I kept it below 65 mph. This thing ran as good or better than it did when it was new. The 2.8 autos were only 3 speeds with no overdrive.Around town it would be a decent driver but I would never...I repeat, never use one again for highway driving. My 90 B2 only gets 12mpg on the highway with OD.

If your lookin for a beater truck with hopes of good mpg I would look for an older F series with a 300 in it or a 2wd ranger.

i have owned several bronco 2s and 4x4 rangers.....the mileage was pretty sucky on the highway... in my opinion i wouldnt use one for long highway hauls.....but they do make cute little snowplow trucks.

So, reading on TRS I noticed there's a chance it could be an A4LD. Seems like 11/84to the end of '85 model year could have had it with a carbed 2.8. Would that do better, or does the overdrive not help at all?

2.8 was always a pretty thirsty engine, despite it's modest displacement.

ummm if it has overdive i wouldnt want it at all. i had a bronco 2 and a 85 ranger with a 2.9 with an overdrive tranny they were both the most gutless pieces of crap i ever owned. once you got up to highway speeds you had to keep your foot in the gas hard just to keep it there. running at 75 mph was really drinkin gas in them

I had a 91 4wd 2.9 manual ranger. Couldn't get out of its own way, but it sure sipped the gas.

That's what I'd be looking for.
