Default Kayak Touring the Manistee River August 20-22

We got back yesterday from our 3 day, 2 night excursion on the Upper Manistee River. It rained A LOT. It rained when we launched, it poured about an hour later for about a half hour. Continuing that trend, the rest of the weekend was on again off again rain/mist/pour with a few traces of sunlight. luckily we were able to eat all of our meals w/0 rain. We did however, have to pack up in rain after the first night. Everything was soaked. I had a good time besides the rain. I have to admit, that I took the wrong boat for the narrow and winding river. When I was preparing for the trip, I was planning for the Lower Manistee which is wider, but just as winding. The 17’ SOT w/o rudder or skeg does not work well for the river. It works, but a more maneuverable boat would have been nice. It took a lot of pre-planning to stay on top of navigating around obstacles, but it worked. It just took a lot more effort in paddling to change direction and a lot of slowing down because once that boat is going in a certain direction, it doesn’t want to change directions very easily. I made it through pretty well. About 10 minutes before we reached West Sharon Bridge where we ended(Started at Cameron Bridge), I was in middle of the river away from all obstacles and I dumped it. My paddle snapped when it happened. I still have no idea why I dumped or why my paddle snapped. Luckily, my beautiful and generous wife offered to let me trade paddles with her because she understood I needed to be able to turn. :)

Cj7 is absolutely right. There are a number of state forest campgrounds along that stretch of the Upper Manistee. It's quite nice because there are picnic tables, pit toilets, and water well. We also stayed at the CCC bridge campsite. Last year when I went with Kent, we did the lower stretch of the manistee and camped on just random parts of the stateland. I enjoyed both, but having the amenities was quite nice.

the old aluminium canoes were pushed not paddled quite often. your kyak might have a more shallow draft and get buy some of it. i guarantee you will be dragging it some of the way. lots of trash on the banks. tons of super drunk people. actually saw 2 hypodermic needles floating on the river and they were literally miles apart. ill never go back! i summer on the Au Sable in oscoda and im spoiled, its clean.
kyak between cook and foot dam on the au sable, its really nice! i think its about 15 miles from dam to dam. if you want to go further its a quick, easy portage around the dam.

have fun!
