1st is it a stick or a mig . with a stick u will want to use like a 5570 rod and to start it u want to start it like a match and keep the rod at a 45degree same with a mig but u need flex core wire OR gas

if you start with the amps up high its easier to learn how to start a weld.....but pay no attention to me i learned to weld with a stick welder when i was 10 yrs old.

FWIW, Road signs are made out of Stainless Steel, not aluminum.

I have seen street signs made of aluminum and old ones made of steel but never saw any stainless ones that I know of.

Street signs are aluminum, I have one in my garage. I think i have seen other aluminum ones also.

all bs aside the best thing for you to do is take some welding class's or find a friend that knows what there doin and have them help you out.
