Default State Forest Campgrounds closing?

Is it just me or is this a typical stupid decision from Lansing? I see they are closing down 12 state forest campgrounds. These are unstaffed campgrounds with minimal upkeep, that bring in money. I don't see where they are laying off the people that empty the trash cans and collect the money envelopes, so how will this save any money?

I guess the good part is that now you can get your state land camping permit and camp on the sites at what used to be a state forest campground for free.

They do it as a knee-jerk reaction to budget cuts.

My favorite, is that they close down Muskrat lake every time this happens, which is ironic, as it is pretty close to the fancy-schmancy new DNR office. Seems like some of those folks could manage the campground - especially since it brings an extra $5 premium/night because it has direct ORV access.

Dicks.

I may actually go back to a state campground now. Those DNR asshats that drive around the parks are such jerks. No respect for the people that bring in revenue.

LOL, the DNR actually has surveillance at many campgrounds and trailheads to catch such asshats.

I want to do this myself, but upon reading the Dispersed Camping rules:
Quote:
the property is not posted "No Camping"
you are more than one mile from a designated State Forest Campground
Is the closed campground posted 'closed"?
or ...
because were talking lower peninsula, its considered closed becuase it's not posted as 'open'

The closed campgrounds I saw when hunting in the UP this fall had the entrances barricaded w/ rocks or mounds. If a trail is blocked like this, it would be designated closed and you would get a ticket if you were on it. I would guess the same goes for the campgrounds. They also pulled the well pumps out.

just a matter who b--ws who they create a parking area and close the campground 2 miles away. makes a lot of $sense to me. Muskrat lake was/ is right at the end of a orv route what can they expect. block off lake access and for what just goes to prove the i---ts that we put in power

From talking F2F with a DNR person at the lovely Mio palace, you can NOT camp there as dispersed camping.
