Default CAUTION 90s Ford Cruise Control Recall

If you own a 90s Ford F series truck then I would advise you take unplug the cruise control / horn connection to the steering wheel. They are known to be faulty and were recalled. My buddy's 94 F150 went up in flames today because of this problem. Its a damn shame because it was a very nice truck and I happened to have my camera with me so I recorded it. He loved the truck but only had PLPD insurance so he's screwed. And we later found out that the fuel lines melted and it was leaking gas so we're lucky it didn't blow.

Hmm... I have a 94 F250. I'll have to stop by a dealer and see if it has been done.

That sucks. Something to think about if you just have PLPD insurance you can add fire and theft to your policy. I think on my truck it was $90.00 more every 6 months.

If its been done to your truck, you will have a fuse in the line from the switch. Either it will be a blade fuse or a fuseable link. If not, Ford should still do it for free. If they don't, you can get a fuse holder from an auto parts and tie it in the positive wire to the sensor. A 3amp fuse will work fine.

Where did it start smoking from? Were there any warning signs other than the smoke such as something electrical not functioning?

Happy for you guys getting out in time. Sorry for the loss of the truck.

Its the switch on the master cylinder. It basically is a pressure switch that the cruise control uses to disengage when braking. What happens is that it may leak, and the switch is fed power 24/7. If it leaks, and then shorts, it lights the brake fluid on fire.

So, it starts at the brake master cylinder and it spreads quickly from there. Its also been known to happen with trucks that have been turned off and parked for a while. It can happen at any time. It is very wise to take it to the dealership or put a fuse in like I described above. That way, it blows the fuse as soon as it shorts and it doesn't burn.

BTW, the positive wire should be red or red/white. And, if you don't use cruise or it doesn't work, you can just unplug it.

Recall 05S28 for this issue has been out for a long time. Letters were sent out to all owners with affected vehicles. Ford is still doing this recall all you have to do is call the dealership and give them your vin, they can tell you if it has been done or not.

So I'm just curious, what was the bill? Fire departments don't come out for free. And what about those people's yard?

I also doubt it would have blown up. That is just a Hollywood thing. All it could have done is made a hotter and larger fire. If you've ever poured gas onto a fire, it doesn't blow up, it goes "WOOF".
